AIA BALTIMORE NEWSLETTER November 14, 2022
Welcome Sydney Jones
Special Programs & Events Manager
Sydney Jones joins us with event five years of experience in nonprofit and corporate event planning. Her passion for community development can be traced back to her work with the Washington D.C. NAACP branch that won her the Gloster B. Current Youth Leadership award. It was during her award ceremony and special events internship at the 2017 NACP National Convention held in Baltimore that she first fell in love with the city’s charm. Inspired by the intersection of art and city development she pursued a Bachelor in Arts Management from The Ohio State University. While at OSU Sydney interned for the Juvenile Justice Coalition and worked special events at the law school. Sydney then spent a year specializing in virtual and arts events before returning to Baltimore.
President's Letter
Our recent warm weekends have seemed a luxury this November ahead of the cold weather to come. Like many in our region, my home is heated with natural gas, a fossil fuel from which we all know we need to divest, and to which the war in Ukraine has added extra urgency. Every year I try to insulate or air seal a bit more to reduce my family’s usage. Every therm saved reduces overall demand in a time of limited supply and is a step forward for our planet.

As important as it is for each of us to personally strive to reduce our energy usage, in our role as architects we have outsize influence on the carbon footprints of our communities. Whether it is siting a building for solar gain, designing net-zero ready, or electrifying an existing structure, we can together realize a renewable and more secure energy future.

It has been heartening to witness these past several years the development of the Framework for Design Excellence and its integration into awards programs at all levels.
Last month we celebrated another group of fantastic projects that seamlessly integrate sustainable practices with elegant architecture at the AIA Baltimore Design Awards. Thank you to all the entries for pushing us to continue to innovate, elevate, and improve our built environment. And thank you to everyone who joined us at Design Awards on one of those luxuriously warm fall evenings to enjoy some much-needed camaraderie. Our Design Awards Committee arranged another wonderful program and event!

Please join us for more networking and fellowship at our Annual Meeting next month on December 9, 2022 has been a year of significant change for our chapter. Hear how those changes are positioning us to advance our chapter mission and goals in 2023, and how you can be involved.

Support the Maryland Architects PAC

Founded in 1995, the Maryland Architects PAC works hand-in-hand with AIA Maryland to achieve its legislative goals. The PAC enables member architects to more fully participate in electing and re-electing legislators who understand and support our profession, our livelihood and our issues. We offer heartfelt thanks to the individuals and organizations that provide direct financial support to the PAC. Their dollars give us a “voice” in promoting the interests of all Maryland architects thereby improving the practice of architecture within the State of Maryland. Without this support, the PAC’s successful activities would not have been possible.

Your help is needed to give architects a strong voice in the Maryland General Assembly.  Every donation – large or small – does make a difference.  Please contribute to your profession NOW.

Climate Priority Setting for 2023 Legislative Session

Date: December 13, 2022
Time: 5:00 - 8:00 PM
Location: Phillip Merrill Education Center, Chesapeake Bay Foundation

1.0 LU | HSW pending

Join AIA Baltimore's Committee on the Environment, AIA Maryland, and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation for a structured conversation on 2023 legislative priorities around climate action. We’ll discuss the wins of 2022, and the opportunities for 2023. Our conversation will include:

  • Changes the Climate Solutions Now act made to Maryland's climate priorities
  • Ideas that were not included in the final Climate Solutions Now act, and what potential changes could be made in 2023
  • Other building performance and climate focused bills that will be a priority this session
  • The legislative process and key delegates and senators that may be instrumental in passing climate-focused legislation

After the discussion, stay for a tour of the Phillip Merrill Education Center, headquarters of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. The center, which opened in 2001, is one of the world's most energy-efficient buildings, incorporating natural elements into a fully functional workplace which has minimal impact on its Bay- and creek-front surroundings. The first building to receive the U.S. Green Building Council's Platinum rating for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), the center and its sophisticated systems have won international acclaim as a model for energy efficiency, high performance, and water conservation. Our tour will focus on the MEP systems and talk about building electrification and water reduction and how these 20-year-old systems are performing.

Frederick Douglass, the Canton Company, and Canton History

Date: Nov. 18, 2022
Time: 1:00 - 1:30 PM

What started out as a volunteer effort to clean up trash on Canton's waterfront led Dr. Raymond Bahr on a path of research that has brought to light where Frederick Douglass escaped from his enslavement, how the Canton Company shaped Baltimore, and the national impact that Canton's industries had on the growth of America. Join Dr. Bahr as he shares his research and findings on this under-told part of our history.

The Baltimore Architecture Foundation (BAF) and Baltimore Heritage present the Virtual Histories Series: 30 minute live virtual tours and presentations focusing on Baltimore architecture, preservation and history. Hosted every Friday at 1:00 pm EST.

Tickets are donation based. We encourage you to give what you can to support BAF and Baltimore Heritage. Your support helps us make up for lost tour and program revenue from COVID-19 and create more virtual programs like this.

Gingerbread Rowhome Build

Date: Dec. 4, 2022
Time: 1:30 - 3:00 PM

The Baltimore Architecture Foundation (BAF) invites youth of all ages to participate in its inaugural Gingerbread Rowhome Build activity. In collaboration with Downtown Partnership’s Candy Lane in Central Plaza, the BAF will host an afternoon of gingerbread rowhome building and decorating on Sunday, December 4, 2022. The rowhouse is synonymous with Baltimore city living and has been instrumental in making Baltimore a city of neighborhoods. With this in mind, the BAF has developed a family-friendly activity to celebrate Baltimore architecture and the holiday season.

In partnership with the Lord Baltimore Hotel’s LB Bistro & Bakery, the BAF is designing and assembling kits that contain all the pieces necessary to build and decorate a two-story rowhome – gingerbread pieces for the walls and roof, royal icing to hold the pieces together, and a bag of candy decorations to add festive flair.

One kit is included with an event ticket to the Gingerbread Rowhome Build activity taking place on Sunday, December 4 at 1:30pm at the Center for Architecture and Design (Plaza level of 100 N. Charles Street, entrance on W. Fayette Street). Pre-registration is required for participation in the Gingerbread Rowhome Build activity. Each kit is suitable for 1-2 children, depending on age. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Tickets will be available on Eventbrite beginning November 7; more information and a link to register can be found at AIABaltimore.org/gingerbread.
