Dear Centennial Crew,

We’d like to share that the current version of our Centennial Calendar was incorrect -- we accidentally did not identify our second staff development day for January as we have in years’ past. As a result, we are adding back in a non-student contact day on Wednesday, 1/4. We sincerely apologize for the miscommunication but  hope that in communicating it now you have time to plan accordingly. We have already confirmed with Discovery Link that they will be offering programming on this day. Thanks for your flexibility and understanding! We will be using this day to revise our school vision in service of the required Innovation renewal process, as well as our EL Education School Credential application. Please see our updated school calendar here.

As we head into the busy holiday season we’d like to share an important message with you from the PTA’s Diversity and Inclusivity Committee:

Thanksgiving is a time of year when many express gratitude for what we have, spend time with our loved ones, and maybe even take this as an opportunity to give back to our communities. And yet, we cannot ignore the unsettling history of this holiday. While many are celebrating Thanksgiving in this way around this country, there are also many Native people who are commemorating it as a time of great loss in their history.

When thinking about how to weave this truth into education and into our home lives with our children, a great way to start is through books. Here is a list of books that are written from the Native perspective, that help us learn about this time in our history in a developmentally appropriate way for our young learners, many you can find right in our school library.

  •  Giving Thanks: A Native American Good Morning Message by Chief Jake Swamp (ages 5-11)

  •  Squanto’s Journey: The Story of the First Thanksgiving by Joseph Bruchac (ages 6- 10)

  •  The Very First Americans by Cara Ashrose (ages 4-8)

  •  1621: A New Look at Thanksgiving by Catherine O’Neill Grace (ages 8-12)

  •  Four Seasons of Corn: A Winnebago Tradition (We Are Still Here) by Sally M. Hunter (age 8+)

  •  The Circle of Thanks: Native American Poems and Songs of Thanksgiving by Joseph Bruchac (age 4+)

  •  Native American History for Kids by Karen Bush Gibson (ages 9-12)

Also check out this webpage for some fun craft and decoration ideas that are culturally sensitive.

Take time to enjoy your family and practice gratitude over the next week.  The entire Centennial crew is grateful for each and every one of you and the support you show our school. Don’t forget that there is no school tomorrow, Friday, November 18th.  We’ll see you back at school on Monday, November 28th, and we look forward to seeing everyone at our Indigenous Heritage Family Night on Wednesday, 11/30! Please see details below.

Sincerely,

Laura and Emily

The
Centennial Clubs Committee needs YOU!
Are you a parent with an interest or talent to share (examples: yoga, printmaking, soccer, journalism, sewing, dance, drumming, space exploration...)?  We'd love to have you volunteer to lead a Club!  Are you a teacher interested in leading a (compensated) Club?  Please contact us ASAP at

As we do every year, PTA is asking our families to contribute to families in need. You can do this in two ways:

Click Here or scan the QR code below to donate via the PTA MemberHub Store.

OR

Drop off Gift Cards ($25 or $50 recommended) to Safeway, King Soopers, Walmart, or Target to the front office. Let Stacy & Jamie know it is for Families in Need. We will be collecting donations and gift cards through Friday, December 9th.

The school's Engagement Support Team works with teachers to identify students and families who need support and then distributes everything to the families before winter break.

Centennial Equity Collective Book Study 22-23

Parents, Caregivers and Staff are Invited!

We look forward to meeting, discussing and applying what we learn.

Let’s continue building a more equitable school and community.

  • First, we will read The House you Pass on the Way, a Young Adult (YA) book, by Jacqueline Woodson.   We will meet two times: Thursday, December 1st, 6:00-7:30  (read through page 67) and Tuesday, January 31st, 6:00-7:30 (read second half of the book).

  • The second YA book we will read and discuss is The Reason I Jump, by Naoki Higashida.  The dates we will meet and discuss it are Thursday, March 9th, 6:00-7:30 and Tuesday, April 25th, 6:00-7:30.

We highly encourage meeting in person (in our school library), however we will have an option to join virtually as well.   We don't have it finalized, but we hope to provide child care at all four sessions.

Bookbar (4280 Tennyson) has ordered these books and you can buy a copy at 10% off (just mention you are part of the Centennial community), or you can check other sources.

Please email me if you plan to join so I can include you on emails and calendar invites.  Let me know if you have any questions. nicole_tembrock@dpsk12.net
