Christmas just around the corner!

Christmas Breakfast in the park, December 2021
As the year races towards Christmas there are plenty of celebratory events around town, including Christmas Lights in the Garden. Held by the Maleny Uniting Church between 19 and 24 December, the MNC and other local groups participate each year with a Christmas lights display.
As always there will be great food, great fun and a welcoming atmosphere at MNC’s annual Christmas Day Breakfast. This free event is made available to anyone from our local community and surrounds to share Christmas morning together. We look forward to seeing you there.
All the MNC staff, volunteers and management committee wish you a safe, enjoyable (and not too busy) leadup to the end of year festivities.
To the many people and groups who donate and support the MNC, we thank you again for your contributions towards strengthening our local community.

And we need volunteers for both events!

Would you like to join in the festivities while supporting our local community by volunteering at both these events?
Christmas Lights: various roles including artistic decoration
Christmas Breakfast: roles include event preparation, set-up, pack-down, food preparation, BBQ's, serving... and generally helping make this event a success.
These events are a lot of fun but rely heavily on the support of community donations and volunteers. Please register your interest and we will be in contact with more specific roles, timing and duties.

President's Report: Welcome to our new MNC Committee

Ian Demack
President, MNC Management Committee
At our AGM on 20 October, several long-serving members of our Management Committee stood down. I’d like to take a moment to acknowledge the time, energy and wisdom they have devoted to the MNC over the years.
Jim Straker, our Vice President, has been a driving force behind the FIXIT Café and our gardening team. He’s been invaluable in his role of Vice President, and I will miss his sage advice. Tracie Ramsdale, our Secretary, has done an exceptional job by minuting our meetings, preparing agendas and managing our correspondence. She has also worked with staff to clarify their roles – a project we’ll build on in the coming year.
Frances Harper, a former Treasurer, played a key role in establishing the CHASM Tiny Home behind the Co-op in Bicentenary Lane. Frances has a massive personal commitment to the principles of social justice, and will be sorely missed. Greg Williams, a former President, is active in many groups in Maleny, and will continue with SpeakUpNow, a group looking to eliminate domestic violence on the Blackall Range.
Roger Westcott is a long-standing member of the MNC, who embodies the ethos of community engagement and participation that informs everything we do at the MNC.
Some other members also stepped down this year. Deb Bird and Katherine Miller both brought a strong positive energy to everything they did with the Management Committee. I am sad to see them go. Finally, our Treasurer for 2022, Leanne Dodd, has stepped down from her executive role but will remain on the Committee. As you probably know, Leanne and her husband Rob have purchased Rosetta Books, so they will have plenty to keep them engaged for the coming year!

New Committee members
While some wonderful friends left us this year, we gained four new Committee members. I’d like to welcome on board Claudia McKay, our new Treasurer, along with Anne Robinson, Linda Danielson and Ted Gardner. Before our next newsletter, I’m hoping to persuade our new Committee members to provide brief profiles of themselves, so you can get to know them better!

Get Ready Queensland week

The summer La Nina season is back, which means stormy weather and lots of rain! In preparation, the Get Ready Maleny team was at the Community Centre kiosk in October for Get Ready Queensland Week.

Big thanks to the Sunshine Coast Council and State Emergency Services representatives for joining us on the day! If you didn’t manage to catch us, take a look at the Get Ready Queensland website and the 3 Steps to Get Ready so you know how to respond quickly and effectively in the event of an emergency:
  1. Understand your risk: impacts from extreme weather are different for everyone. Learn about what can happen where you live and how it could affect your family.

  2. Have a plan: make a household emergency plan so your family knows what to do and who to contact in extreme weather. It takes just a few minutes and it will give you peace of mind to know that that your information is in one place.

  3. Pack a kit (box): grab a few extra items next time you are at the supermarket to make an emergency kit.

MNC nominated previous MNC Vice-president Jim Straker for the Andrew Wallace Senior of the Year award recently held at Caloundra Boat Club. We are very proud of him for making it to the top three out of the many people who were nominated in this category.

2022 Andrew Powell Volunteer of the Year

This year the MNC  has nominated Karen Sheiles, our admin volunteer, for this award, recognising all the administration work that Karen does each week here at the Centre.
A morning tea will be held on Friday 18 November at 10am at the Maleny Community Centre.
Enjoy gardening?
Join MNC's volunteer gardening team
If you enjoy gardening, we'd love to meet you. We have beautiful grounds to
work in, which create a welcoming place to visit. The upkeep of our community garden includes weeding, watering, planting & pruning. Any help big or small, would be very much appreciated.  Some of the garden's produce also supplies Thursday's Community Lunch.
MNC is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 3pm. Volunteers can work a half or full day or as needed. Please contact Nancy on 5499 9345 if you are interested in volunteering – we look forward to meeting YOU.
Wednesdays 9 am – noon
Orange Sky free Laundry Service

The Laundry operates from a van in the MNC carpark.
We have a simple formula; we provide a platform for every day Australians to connect through a regular laundry service.
The focus is on creating a safe, positive and supportive environment for people who are too often ignored or who feel disconnected from the community. Our volunteers are not social workers or experts on homelessness – but they are empathetic listeners and great conversationalists.
