Dear <<First Name>>, here is the National eResearch Newsletter.
National eResearch Newsletter - November 2022
Message from AeRO:

The eResearch Australasia Conference was attended by over 450 delegates in person, and another 100 or so online.  The organisation seemed to go well, though I honestly think that folk were just so pleased to be able to interact face-face again, it wouldn’t have mattered.

If you haven’t done so already, please complete the surveys that were sent to you from Conference Design, the conference managers.

The Conference recordings are now available (for the next 3 months) to registered delegates – log in to the Conference OnAir Portal with your conference credentials here:  https://portalapp.cdesign.eventsair.com/VirtualAttendeePortal/2022-eresearch-australasia/eresearch-online/.

We trust you enjoyed and benefited fully from the Conference, and we look forward to next year’s (no news yet on when/where).

Alex Reid, eResAU2022 Program Co-Chair & Newsletter Editor (editor@aero.edu.au).

Tech Talk 18:  Containers for Scientific Software Distribution:  22-Nov
Title:  “Containers for Scientific Software Distribution Service” (include security scanning and CVMFS).
Online at 13:00 AEDT on Tuesday, 22-Nov-22.

Presented by Steffen Bollman, Research Fellow, University of Queensland, and Audrey Stott, Bioinformatics Platform Specialist, Pawsey.

Installing scientific software on HPC often requires substantial amounts of work.  The presenters would like to get input from the community on their idea for a community-led system (collecting container recipes in a GitHub repository) that makes building and distributing scientific software more sustainable.

AI in Materials Science Training:  23-Nov
Developed by the NCI Training Team, this online course showcases how you can apply Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to your materials science workflows.  A key focus of this course will be on the heterogeneity and scarcity of materials data, the challenges these characteristics present for ML and the potential approaches to overcome them.

Capturing Long-term Impact of Training on Researchers
Intersect Australia’s digital skills training program so far has trained over 31,000 HDR students and researchers through over 2,100 workshops.

Short-term impact has been relatively easy to assess.  However, determining long-term impact on researchers is more challenging.

Accordingly, Intersect administered a survey to assess the long-term impact on researchers.  In addition, we also sought to gain insights into two other key areas of interest:  1) the relationship between training and support structures at universities;  and 2) the link between training and research outputs and grants.

ARDC’s Publishing Sensitive Data Guide Available
ARDC’s Publishing Sensitive Data guide outlines best practice for the publication of sensitive research data in the Australian context.  The guide follows the sequence of steps that are necessary for publishing and sharing sensitive data, as outlined in the Publishing and Sharing Sensitive Data flowchart.  It provides the detail and context to the steps in this Guide. References for further reading are provided for those that are interested.

By following the Guide’s Flowchart, you will be able to make clear, lawful, and ethical decisions about safely making your data available for reuse.

AARNet is Decommissioning CloudStor at the end of 2023
AARNet launched CloudStor 15 years ago to solve the problem researchers had with sharing large files over the Internet.  At the time, CloudStor filled a considerable market gap.  However we’ve made the difficult decision to decommission CloudStor at the end of 2023 because the underlying software and platform architecture have reached their end of life and we’ve determined that rebuilding the platform to meet the future needs of researchers is not possible within the funding available.  We’re also conscious that institutions now use a range of other file sharing services to support their users.

We will be notifying users and providing more detail in the coming months.  We have directly contacted universities and research institutes with CloudStor Enterprise Agreements to discuss transition plans.
