Acme Connector

On a rainy day in October, a large group gathered to celebrate the ribbon cutting of the southernmost leg of the Nakwema Trailway in Acme Township. Advocates, funders, state and local elected officials, partners, and trail enthusiasts all came out to cut the ribbon and celebrate the new two mile trail. The Connector reflects who we are and what's important to us as a community. The Acme Connector supports direct connections to desired destinations and creates important opportunities for quality outdoor recreation and economic development. It is the start of connections to come and stories to share.

Deepwater Connector

Trail on the ground in Acme is just one of many exciting things happening along the Nakwema Trailway corridor. Schematic design is also currently underway for the Deepwater Connector. Trail planners are working with Acme Township and landowners on this essential connection. This section of the Nakwema Trailway will begin at Bayside Park, the southernmost trailhead of the Trailway, and will provide a critical connection for a densely populated area to the Acme Connector and our regional trail network. We are working to advance engineering to get the project shovel ready in the coming year.

Speak Up For Outdoor Recreation

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources drafted a new State of Michigan's Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan (SCORP) for 2023-2027. The SCORP is a five-year strategic plan designed to evaluate ongoing and emerging outdoor recreation trends, needs, and issues to establish priorities for achieving outdoor recreation goals. A public comment period is now open until Dec. 1, 2022, before submitting the plan to the U.S. Department of the Interior's National Park Service. Review the draft plan here and send comments or suggestions to DNR-SCORP@Michigan.gov.

SPECIAL THANKS

We had a great time talking about the Nakwema Trailway last month at Bier's Inwood Brewery. A big thank you to our hosts and all who made it out there. We're grateful for the opportunity to make new connections and reconnect with some familiar faces along the corridor.

If you haven’t been, check out Bier’s in the historic Inwood area, six miles south of Charlevoix. Also a perfect setting for Lake Michigan sunsets.
