HOWARD LEAGUE SCOTLAND
FILM NIGHTS AND CONVERSATIONS WITH..........

The nights are drawing in! Join us for three evenings of film nights over this winter and early Spring ‘23 focusing on the penal policy issues that Howard League Scotland sees as important .

Films and TV shows often raise, in vivid ways, important issues about
punishment and prisons. This short series of film nights on relevant topics is
intended to promote awareness of these challenging issues, and to provoke
engaging discussions about how they can be addressed, all in a relaxed and
informal setting.

“White Bear” and conversation with Jamie Bennett
Wednesday 7 December 2022 at 8pm - 9pm (online)

‘White Bear’, is an episode of Black Mirror, which is a dystopian television series created by Charlie Brooker which often draws on futuristic science fiction to comment on contemporary issues.  The episode follows Victoria, a woman who does not remember who she is, and who wakes up in a place where almost everybody is controlled by a television signal. Along with some of the few other unaffected people she must stop the "White Bear" transmitter while surviving merciless pursuers.

Jamie Bennett has experience working in prisons in England and Wales at senior levels both as Governor and in national strategy at HMPPS. He is currently the Chief Strategy Officer at the Youth Justice Board for England and Wales. Jamie has also written extensively on prisons including on prison films, and he currently edits the Prison Service Journal.
