Dear neighbor,

In late September, a lot of us looked outside one day and saw trees that had been decimated by webworms, tiny insects that had quietly built hundreds of sticky, ugly webs all over town, practically overnight.

On social media, bad advice abounded on what to do
so our environment reporter Haley Samsel decided to get the facts. Her story about what had happened and whether the trees were in peril (Spoiler alert: Probably not!) was one of the most popular on our site in October. It spurred more people to sign up for our free newsletters than any other article that month.

When we started our nonprofit newsroom last year, we didn’t necessarily think we’d be writing about worm attacks. But we want to report on the things that matter in your daily life, that answer the questions you have about living here.

So yes, we report on big, serious news, like the hiring of a new Fort Worth school superintendent, how the city spent $146 million in federal funds in just six months, and why TCU and UNTHSC dissolved their high-profile partnership on the new medical school. We cover local elections and school board meetings and city council work sessions.

But we also try to answer the questions you come across every day. Things like what happened to the shuttered Forest Park miniature train, why Tarrant County suffered through such an intensely hot summer  and what you should do about your worm-infested trees.

Simply put, we exist to serve our community of readers. And as a nonprofit, we depend on readers like you to keep this work going.

You can help by contributing to our year-end campaign to bring in $15,000 to support our newsroom.

And starting today, you can TRIPLE your impact!

The next $5,000 in gifts we receive will be TRIPLED through NewsMatch, a matching campaign that supports nonprofit news organizations around the country, and through a $5,000 challenge grant from generous local readers Dana and David Porter.

That means: If you donate $100 today, Fort Worth Report will receive $300!

What do you say? Will you invest in community-driven journalism?

Yes, I'll support Fort Worth Report!

For an independent nonprofit like us, this fundraising campaign is a big deal. It will help us deliver the kind of in-depth, intensely local journalism you’ve come to expect, every day. It’s the kind of reporting that can make a real difference in our community. We hope you’ll join us.

With gratitude,

Thomas Martinez
Managing Editor

P.S. As we race to meet our year-end fundraising goals, we’ll be sending more emails like this than usual. If you have already given, or aren’t able to give right now, you can opt out of our "End of Year Campaign" emails and we’ll resume these types of emails next year.
