American Baptists Advocate for Myanmar at International Religious Freedom Summit

VALLEY FORGE, PA (11/14/22)—The Burma Advocacy Group, a sub-committee of the Burma Refugee Commission of American Baptist Churches USA, has launched a second signature campaign asking American Baptist pastors, leaders, congregations, and individuals to sign the letter which will automatically go to their respective State Senators to advocate for the passing of the Burma Bill. The vote in the Senate is expected before Thanksgiving – immediate action is needed. The ongoing military attacks on the people of Burma were heightened by recent airstrikes on the Chin State, Kachin State, Karen State and others. Your support and participation are imperative to urge the U.S. Congress to take action against the military regime.

Rev. Dr. A. Roy Medley, Convener of the Burma Advocacy Group and General Secretary Emeritus for ABCUSA, said, “We appeal to American Baptists to join with our brothers and sisters from Burma in the US in our appeal for passage of the Burma Act by the U.S. Senate. This bill will further strengthen U.S. efforts against the brutal reign of the Military Junta which seized power February 1, 2020. Thousands of Baptists as well as others have been targeted for indiscriminate bombing, burning of churches resulting in a large number of internal and external refugees.”

The Goal of the Campaign is to gather and submit as many signatures as possible to our US Senators from U.S. citizens who are 18+ years of age to request them to pass the BURMA Act that has already passed the House. The Burma Advocacy Group believes the BURMA Act is our greatest opportunity to achieve:

  1. an end to the brutal military dictatorship in Burma,
  2. an opportunity to achieve a federal democracy in Burma for which the people of Burma have been giving their lives,
  3. and provide millions in humanitarian aid for Burma.
