Dear Friends,

It's November and winter is fast approaching. Somehow, November always seems like a season for reflection to me. Veterans Day reminds us of the sacrifices made by the citizen soldiers who have always protected our Nation. The cooling temperatures and coming winter call to mind the cycle of, and fragility of life.

Let's get started!

November 14th marked the launch of my new video series. Earlier this year, my wife Julie and I were asked to give a reflection at Vespers. The theme was Mercy. We were inspired by an incident that occurred when Julie's family escaped Ukraine during World War 2 and what it told us about mercy, compassion, and the meaning of the parable of the Good Samaritan. Our presentation coincided with the beginning of the current conflict in Ukraine.

That Vespers reflection grew into this three part video that we are proud to share with you this month..

I know this video probably isn't what you expected to find here. Most of you know me as a neurosurgeon, as a coach, or as a writer and speaker. However, we hope these particular videos might be an opportunity for us all to reflect on what it truly means to care for our fellow man, and to better understand the story of the Good Samaritan.

After you watch, please be sure to subscribe to my YouTube channel to see the next two episodes.

Oct. 31: It was an honor and privilege to speak to the Psychology of Elite Performance class at West Point.
For 220 years, many of our country's leaders have attended West Point. You can sense the history around you. We talked about Cognitive Dominance and the nature of fear.
Book Publication Anniversary

November 5th marked the 3rd Anniversary of the publication of my book "Cognitive Dominance : A Brain Surgeon's Quest to Out-Think Fear."

The writing was a true labor of love, and I'm thankful for the book's success. I'm especially grateful to all the readers who have taken the time to share with me and with others how the book impacted on their lives. Readers may recall the role played in the book by the grippers that my Dad used constantly. A few days ago, near the anniversary, my heart was warmed when I happened upon his original "gripper" which was used for the cover of the book.

Cognitive Dominance is still available on Amazon. If you know someone who might enjoy or benefit, may I humbly suggest it for your Christmas Shopping list.
We're committed to sharing content from the website that still has value and purpose. Something you may not know, is that I routinely do book reviews on my website. The philosopher Epictetus called books "the training weights of the mind." As a wrestler and as a Philosophy undergrad, I find that an appealing idea.

I became a fan of Andy Andrews many years ago. One of my favorite books is "The Traveler's Gift", his New York Times Best Seller. This particular book review is part review..., part memoir, as the book drew me closer to my father and became a shared bond up to and after my Dad's passing. You can read about that experience here:

Proud to announce the newest Doctor in the family. Our daughter Kaleigh just successfully defended her PhD thesis at Virginia Tech!
In this photo, she is joined by her advisors.

For 20+ years the McLaughlin family has gathered in the leadup to Thanksgiving with Pingry School's legendary soccer coach Miller Bugliari. What began as a small family event has grown into a celebration of love and friendship that welcomes many Pingry alumni. Looking forward to seeing so many old friends.

I said Coach Bugliari is legendary, and I am not kidding. This is his 63rd consecutive year coaching the Pingry Soccer team. His accomplishments were  featured in the Wall Street Journal on November 3rd of this year.
