I was Board Certified in Family Law
30 years ago. These are the three most important lessons I've learned.

This month, I celebrate 30 years of being Board Certified in Family Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. Board certification isn’t required to practice in a particular area, but it’s an added “Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval” that indicates a lawyer has extra training and a demonstrated commitment to their practice. Less than 7% of Texas’ 110,000 lawyers are Board Certified, which requires twice as much continuing legal education as non-Board-Certified lawyers must take. And that’s on top of the rigorous experience requirements and testing to receive the certification in the first place.

Family lawyers see a lot. Over the last three decades, these are some of the most important things I’ve learned representing divorcing couples:

1. “Do you want to send your children to college — or mine?”

A colleague in the family law bar used to say this to clients when they were ready to go to the mat over less-than-crucial issues. That’s because legal fees can add up quickly, and unless you have unlimited resources, the money you’re spending to fight it out in court could probably be better spent on your own family.

In other words, despite the emotional upheaval most people experience in divorce, it’s best not to give in to bitterness and the desire for revenge. You have the power to decide which battles to wage and which to walk away from. Pick only the fights that count in the long run. Pyrrhic victories benefit nobody, least of all your family (or your long-term financial stability).

Child custody and property division issues take the final spots on the top three.
Read on for my next two lessons.
