Winter Golf in Charlotte

Carolina Lakes Golf Club

Well I hope you enjoyed Fall while it lasted (which seemed like about 3 weeks). With the time change and the first freeze warnings this week, winter has arrived. That doesn’t mean you have to put the clubs in storage until March, though.

Fall maintenance work means most courses are in good shape heading into the colder months. Many local courses will turn yellow as the Bermuda fairways and rough go dormant until April, but they are still very playable.

A few courses will be using the winter to work on upgrades and improvements. The Dr. Charles L. Sifford Course is closing on December 1st for 3 months to make capital improvements to the course as well as upgrades to the clubhouse. Watch my Twitter and Instagram feeds for the latest updates on these and other courses’ projects.

And as always, please keep the course reviews coming in as you get out to play on nice weather days.

Toptracer at The Divide

The Divide Opens a Toptracer Range

The Divide opened a Toptracer range in late August and it is worth checking out. There are so many ways to use it to help you practice, including a 30-shot skills assessment simulated on the Champion Course at PGA National. You can also save your practice data between sessions and track your progress.

The Toptracer range is open every day, 11am to close, and the cost ranges from $10-$35 for small (35 balls) to jumbo size (155 balls) buckets.

Pinnacle Golf Properties also added a Beer Garden and Tap Room to Highland Creek in September. It features pizzas from a wood-fired oven, cold draft beers, regular live music, and outdoor seating with scenic views of the 18th hole.

Bringing Home TheGrint Cup

If you’ve followed me this season, you know that I played in nearly a dozen events on TheGrint Tour here in the Carolinas and down in Florida. I am happy to report that I won the Tour Championship at Holly Ridge in September and locked up TheGrint Cup trophy in the season-long points race! That earned me $500 in cash and credits for next season.

B-Man with TheGrint Cup trophy

If you want to join me on TheGrint Tour here in the Carolinas, we start up again in February. We will be kicking things off at Kiawah Island Resort on Super Bowl weekend in February with The Battle at Osprey Point and The Island Cup at Kiawah, including the final round on The Ocean Course!

If you're interested in playing the friendliest amateur tour in the Carolinas, send me a note and I can get you a sweet new member sign-up deal.

Doral, Whistling Straits, Erin Hills, Chicago Golf Club… OH MY!!!

This Fall, I embarked on the greatest 8 week stretch of golf in my life. I took a scouting trip for TripCaddie to Turning Stone Resort & Casino in NY at the end of August. Then I flew down to Miami for The Blue Monster Cup tournament on TheGrint Tour and got to play Trump Doral, which just hosted the LIV Golf finale. I flew straight from Miami to Las Vegas and got in one round at Bali Hai Golf Club.

Next up was my return to Whistling Straits for another Ready-Made Golf Trip with TripCaddie. We also played Blackwolf Run and Erin Hills while we were there. I closed out that trip with a once-in-a-lifetime round at Chicago Golf Club, the oldest 18-hole course in North America (1894).

I finished up my 2 month golf odyssey with a week-long visit to my cousin’s new home in The Villages down in Orlando, FL. He and I played 267 holes of golf in 6 days (!!!) on The Villages’ smorgasbord of championship and executive courses.

It was an epic run that I will never forget!

Always Get Your Clubs Back with idSquares

Ever forget your rangefinder and leave it stuck on the golf cart after your round? Or how about leaving a wedge after you walk off the green? If you're lucky, a friendly golfer playing behind you or a staff member will return your lost club or rangefinder to the pro shop so you can get it back.

Here's a way to virtually ensure you'll get your equipment back – and get it back quickly. Put an idSquares QR code lost-and-found label on it. When someone finds your club and scans the code, they'll see a message with your contact info. Then they can email, text or call you to let you know they found it.

You can get a sheet of 30 labels for $16. The labels also work great on keys, phones, tablets, laptops, cameras, water bottles, speakers, headphones and other sports equipment like rackets, lacrosse sticks, scooters, bikes and helmets.

If you'd like to try them out or see how they work, send me a note. I can also help out with bulk orders if you'd like to buy sheets for your company or sports team.

Eagle Chase Golf Club

Eagle Chase Golf Club (11/3) - 4.5 stars - “Played Eagle Chase for the first time yesterday. I had heard about the elevation changes, but I wasn’t expecting as much as I saw. The layout is spectacular. Can be difficult but fair. The greens were a little slow for me, but they were smooth and true. The undulations in the greens were problematic for me, but it will take quite a few rounds to figure them out. The staff was very friendly and professional. Looking forward to coming back soon!”

Sapona Country Club (10/30) - 4 stars - “Played in TheGrint Tour’s season opening event yesterday at Sapona and the greens were immaculate! These Zoysia greens are the toughest, fastest I’ve played all year. They were legit 13+ on the stimpmeter. And with the slopes and undulations, several pins were 10/10 difficulty. They roll true, but if you struggle with putting, I wouldn’t recommend playing Sapona. The course is very challenging with tree-lined, hilly terrain throughout. Sapona is a semi-private course. So it’s open for public play at very reasonable rates. Only about 45-60 minutes up I-85 from Charlotte, too. It’s worth the drive and money if you are up for a challenge!”

Rocky River Golf Club (10/5) - 4.5 stars - “Course was in great shape, greens were fast and smooth, fairways were lush and the bunkers were in great shape as well. I love the layout, no houses in sight, at times on certain holes you feel like you’re out in the country. We will definitely be back, one of if not the best course in the Charlotte area.”

Olde Sycamore Golf Plantation (9/16) - 2.5 stars - “Tee boxes – above average. Fairways – excellent. Greens – below average. Played the course more times than I can count in the last 5 years. The greens were the best the crew can make them, but more than half of them have dead spots. Tough for bent grass greens to survive the summers down here. I hope they change to hybrid Bermuda like much of the area has I’ve the years.“
