Alumni Highlight

John Jairo Montoya-Rivera, S.J. (CLAS ‘16) is currently the Assistant and Chief of Staff to the Provincial, Society of Jesus, in Colombia where he is also a law professor at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá. Prior to joining the M.A. in Latin American Studies at Georgetown University he served as the director of the Jesuit Refugee Service in Colombia for 5 years.

John would like to pay special thanks to the late Marc Chernick, CLAS former Director and a beloved professor, as well as to his fellow classmates and the wider GU community. When asked about his time at CLAS, John said, “my time at CLAS had a tremendous impact on my formation, academically, professionally, and personally. The best part of the MA was the program’s flexibility. I was able to choose classes that fit well with my professional trajectory, and what I had planned to do next. The result has led to many opportunities including my responsibilities today. I feel proud of my MA in Latin American Studies; it has served me enormously in my work in Colombia. It allowed me to look at Latin America and the Caribbean in a more profound way, and make important interdisciplinary connections between law and politics. I continue to feel connected to CLAS today and look forward to working with students and faculty of the program in the future, particularly with those that come to Colombia for the CLAS Summer Program”.

Event Recap: Observatory on Democracy in Latin America with AUSJAL

On November 14, CLAS welcomed Dr. Francisco Urrutia de la Torre and Ángel Álvarez from the International Association of Jesuit Universities (AUSJAL) to discuss their Observatory on Democracy in Latin America. They discussed the growing disenchantment with democracy in the region, and the role that Jesuit universities can play to restore faith in democracy. Finally, they discussed their efforts to establish the Permanent Observatory of Democracy in Latin America for research and socio-political advocacy. If you are interested in participating in AUSJAL’s Observatory, you can contact Dr. Urrutia de la Torre directly at secretario.ausjal@iteso.mx.

LA GEOPOLÍTICA AMBIENTAL DE ESTADOS UNIDOS Y SUS ALIADOS DEL NORTE GLOBAL
CLACSO

A Legal System for All: Advancing Criminal Justice Reforms in the Caribbean, A Fireside Chat with Criminal Justice Experts Sirah Abraham and Nicola Suter

Georgetown Americas Institute
November 17, 2022
4:00-5:00 pm
Intercultural Center (ICC) McGhee Library
RSVP Here

Throughout the Caribbean region, women, LGBTQI+ persons, victims of gender-based violence, the poor, indigenous communities, and ethnic and religious minorities, among others, have historically faced inequality, discrimination, and exclusion from the justice system. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic has severely exacerbated inequitable access to justice for many of these marginalized communities. Much-needed legislative and legal reforms and strengthening of institutional capacity in the Caribbean are required as reform advocates work toward creating a justice system for all and one that operates free from discrimination, gender bias, stereotyping, stigma, and indifference - especially for those most vulnerable.

To examine these issues, top criminal justice experts at the forefront of the Caribbean region’s justice sector reform movement, Sirah Abraham and Nicola Suter, will discuss their professional journey advising the Caribbean region about ways to address the systematic barriers which marginalized citizens encounter when accessing justice and how their efforts are creating a more accessible, fair, and efficient system for all persons. Abraham and Suter will be interviewed by Jake Patrick Collins (G’24), a Georgetown University School of Foreign Service master’s degree candidate in Latin American studies.

Join LAFAA this Friday, November 18 at 12:30 pm for a special event with Fran Omar, a leader from the Popular Resistance and Rebellion Bloc in El Salvador. The grassroots coalition has been one of the main mobilizing forces behind street protests that have taken place over the past year.

We’ll talk about the current situation, including mass arrests after constitutional rights were suspended in March, as well as to hear the organizing proposals that students, unions, feminists, environmental defenders and many more are putting forward for the struggles ahead.
