The 2022 Salvation Army Christmas Appeal

It has been another difficult year for communities across Australia. And as Christmas approaches – it is becoming increasingly clear that many Australians are going to struggle to have even a modest celebration.

We all know Christmas is a time for joy. But for those doing it tough – it is often challenging, heartbreaking and isolating. Last Christmas, The Salvation Army provided around over 64,000 hampers as well as 26,000 gifts to individuals and families in need. As cost of living increases continue to impact communities across the country, your support is more important now than ever. By collecting and donating food or gifts, you can help us make sure we leave no one in need this festive season.

The Burra Council office will be accepting food & gift donations from Tuesday 22 November 2022 until Wednesday 14 December 2022.

Please consider giving to a family in need this Christmas.

State of the Environment Report 2023

The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) is seeking your help in developing the State of the Environment Report 2023. This vital report collates information from multiple sources to assess the pressures that are placed on our environment and what impacts these may be having on our land, sea, air and inland waters. It also captures what is being done to help protect, restore and enhance our environment for current and future generations.

The EPA has developed a SOER 2023 YourSAY page that enables our community to provide the following input:
  • Uploading photos and sharing stories that can be used in the SOER website and report;
  • Telling us what about the environment is important to you and what you think the key issues are impacting the environment in your region;
  • Informing us of any projects/programs that are being undertaken that contribute to improving the health of the environment;
  • Telling us what you think the SOER should deliver.

Consultation closes December 2022

NYLB Helping Goyder's Line farmers get climate fit

Helping farmers with properties vulnerable to the impacts of a changing climate was the focus of the Goyder’s Line project. With Goyder’s Line - the edge of reliable rainfall in SA - moving further south, the project aimed to boost farmers’ climate fitness for the future.

During the busy, year-long project, more than 1180 land managers attended 15 workshops, 7 field days and 3 Agri forums to explore innovative ideas and share experiences with neighbours.

Fifteen land managers worked with a consultant to create a tailored property management plan to support drought resilience, which included on-ground operations such as earthworks to reduce erosion and capture moisture, revegetation, shelter belts, stock containment areas, and relocating water points. As a result, 13km of fencing, 20km of water pipeline, 29 troughs, and 12 stock feeders were installed, with more than 40,000ha now managed to best practice standards.

Key to protecting soil and animal health in dry times is the use of stock containment areas, which are small, fenced sections set up to intensively hold, feed and water livestock. Through the project, 32 containment areas were installed, along with 20 shelterbelts that were planted with a total of 3,200 native plants.

The Goyder’s Line project was led by the Northern and Yorke Landscape Board, through funding from the Australian Government’s Future Drought Fund.
