Missile Explosion Kills Two
An air defense missile struck near the Ukrainian-Polish border, landed in Poland, and killed two civilians on Tuesday. The missile struck as Russia fired approximately 90 missiles across Ukraine on Tuesday, one of the widest spread aerial attacks since the start of the invasion. Ukraine’s air defense managed to strike down at least 70 of those missiles according to Ukraine’s reports. The origin of the deadly air defense missile landing in NATO-allied Poland is unknown. The missile is identified as Russian-made, but Poland’s president, the secretary of NATO, and other world leaders have claimed it was an accidental misfire from Ukraine. Ukraine denies the missile was theirs, citing they have evidence the missile was Russian launched. Russia also denies responsibility, claiming they fired no missiles towards Poland.

South China Sea Tensions
U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris is scheduled to visit the Philippine islands of Palawan, on the edge of the South China Sea. The Philippines is a defense ally of the United States. China has dredged the sea floor to build airstrips and harbors on the Spratly Islands, which are also claimed by Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Vietnam. China cites domestic historical maps in claiming some of the territories off of Palawan and in much of the South China Sea, however a 2016 international arbitration ruling stated these claims had no legal basis. Harris’ trip may be interpreted by Beijing as a rebuke, especially coming days after U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping had their face-to-face meeting intending to ease tensions. The South China sea contains massive oil and gas deposits and is the stage for $5 trillion in ship-borne trade each year.

Artemis I Moon Rocket Launched
The most powerful rocket NASA has ever built - the Space Launch System (SLS) - took off into the Florida sky this morning on the Artemis 1 mission. Liftoff occurred at 1:47 a.m. ET from NASA’s Pad 39B at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Artemis 1 is sending NASA’s new Orion spacecraft on an unmanned test flight around the moon. This mission is NASA’s first flight of a crew-capable moon ship in nearly 50 years, and will serve as a testing ground to see if SLS and Orion are ready to help return astronauts to the lunar surface. While this morning’s launch saw its fair share of setbacks, NASA was still able to lift-off successfully.

This map depicts where and when the launch of the Space Launch System rocket will be visible in Florida. Click on the map to learn more.

Q: What is the name of Turkey's second largest lake, known for its vibrant pink color?

A: Lake Tuz
Tuz Golu, or Lake Tuz, is a saline lake located in the arid central plateau of the Central Anatolia region of Turkey, just 87 miles (140 km) from the capital city of Ankara. At 580 sq miles (1,500 sq km), Lake Tuz is Turkey’s second largest lake after Lake Van. Although large in size, for most of the year Lake Tuz is extremely shallow, with a depth of just 1.6 - 3.2 ft (.5 - 1 m). The lake’s unique bright pink hue is due to the Dunaliella salina micro-algae and Halobacteria that grows in its highly saline waters. In the dry summer months, much of the water evaporates and leaves a thick crust of salt on the surface up to one foot tall. The salt that is produced is extracted and refined, and sold in local markets, making it the biggest industry for the smaller economies of nearby towns. Industrial pollution and the overuse of ground waters is threatening the lake and the surrounding flora and fauna, however the World Wildlife Foundation of Turkey is working with other organizations to support the conservation and rehabilitation projects of Lake Tuz.
