Youth gambling

Research on factors related to youth gambling has found that young people (up to 24 years of age) are at a high risk of experiencing gambling-related harms. Further, early involvement in gambling may be predictive of experiencing gambling harms later in life. How can research on youth gambling inform age-appropriate prevention, education, and treatment services?

Teacher attitudes towards and awareness of adolescent gambling behaviour in the UK

Teachers spend a significant amount of time with students and their attitudes can make an impact on engagement in high-risk behaviour. The purpose of this study from Roberts et al (2022) was to understand teachers’ awareness of and attitudes towards adolescent gambling in the United Kingdom.
These plain language research snapshots highlight emerging evidence related to youth gambling:

The Lower-Risk Gambling Guidelines

The Lower-Risk Gambling Guidelines can be a useful resource to help regulators, public health professionals, people who gamble, and others reduce gambling-related harms in the population. This project included collaboration with researchers in eight countries, analysis of epidemiological data from over 60,000 people who gamble, consultation with a multi-sectorial advisory committee made up of over 20 members, input from over 10,000 people via an online survey, and qualitative data obtained from focus groups and interviews with people who gamble.

This paper by Young et al (2022) presents the results from the first large-scale, comprehensive, international project to develop lower-risk gambling guidelines for adults. The paper describes two studies that the research team did to arrive at the final guidelines. The final recommendations for lower-risk gambling are presented as well as recommended messaging aimed at special risk populations and gambling types is also included.

To access these funds, authors or research groups must be affiliated with a UK institution. Individuals may be awarded this funding only once per calendar year (based on the manuscript acceptance date). Priority for this funding will be given to:
  • Meta-analyses, systematic reviews of literature, and scoping reviews
  • Secondary data analyses using datasets listed in the Greo's Evidence Centre
  • Manuscripts that directly address gambling harm reduction
  • Manuscripts that include policy implications for harm prevention, reduction, and/or mitigation
