Apply Now: MSRI-UP 2023 Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates

Research Topic: "Topological Data Analysis"
June 10 - July 23, 2023 at SLMath in Berkeley, CA

MSRI-UP is an award-winning comprehensive Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program aimed at identifying and supporting talented students from underrepresented backgrounds interested in careers in the mathematical sciences. (Learn more)

2023 Program Director: Dr. Mercedes Franco (Queensborough Community College (CUNY)
2023 Research Leader: Dr. Jose Perea (Northeastern University)

Research Topic: The 2023 program will focus on how ideas from classic algebraic topology - like (co)homology and other descriptors - can be used in machine learning tasks such as dimensionality reduction, time series analysis and data alignment. Participants will contribute to research projects ranging from the needed mathematical foundations, to their algorithmic implementation, and subsequent application to specific scientific domains.

Students who have had a linear algebra course and a course in which they have had to write proofs are eligible to apply. Familiarity with Python/Jupyter Notebooks, statistics, or the topology of metric spaces will be helpful.

Please help us to spread the word about this opportunity to your undergraduate contacts by sharing the following announcement (also available as a PDF).

Apply now via the NSF Education & Training Program website

Application Deadline: February 15, 2023

Applications submitted after February 15, 2023 but by March 1, 2023 may still be considered in a second round of acceptances.

The Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI) is becoming the Simons Laufer Mathematical Sciences Institute (SLMath) in 2022-23.

Eligibility

MSRI-UP seeks undergraduates from groups that are underrepresented in the mathematical sciences (including women and gender-expansive individuals), who have completed two years of university-level mathematics courses and would like to conduct research in the mathematical sciences.

Students who will have graduated by August 31, 2023 are not eligible.

Due to funding restrictions, only U.S. citizens and permanent residents are eligible to apply. Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) students are also eligible thanks to generous funding by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. The program cannot accept foreign students regardless of funding.

Activities & Support

MSRI-UP 2023 students will:

  • Participate in the mathematics research program under the direction of Dr. Jose Perea (Northeastern University)
  • Receive additional support of a dedicated post-doc and two graduate students
  • Complete a research project done in collaboration with other MSRI-UP students
  • Give a presentation and write a technical report on their research project
  • Attend a series of colloquium talks given by leading researchers in their fields
  • Attend workshops aimed at developing skills and techniques needed for research careers in the mathematical sciences
  • Learn techniques that will maximize a student's likelihood of admissions to graduate programs as well as the likelihood of winning fellowships
All participants will receive a $3,600 stipend, as well as lodging, meals, and roundtrip travel to Berkeley, CA.

Each student selected for this program will be introduced to a network of mentors and given advice and assistance in navigating the process of applying to graduate schools and fellowship programs.

All participants have the opportunity to present summer research at national conferences in the year following the summer program, and alumni will be contacted regarding future research opportunities.
