November 2022

The MRV Collective is an expanding coalition of MRV (Measurement, Reporting & Verification) companies building an open MRV protocol to accelerate investment in nature-based solutions for climate mitigation.

TLDR Highlights

Summary and Key Learnings

Recap of Verge 2022 Nature Forum and RFSI

The MRV Collective attended the Regenerative Food Systems Investment (RFSI) in Denver and Verge 2022 in Silicon Valley.

This year Verge hosted the first Nature Forum which was a daylong event with about 80 participants from diverse backgrounds including representatives from the White House, Science Based Targets Initiative, brands and corporates including Nike and Allbirds, Impossible Foods and Clif Bar, Walmart and ABInbev. An indigenous elder from British Columbia Canada was also present who brought a fresh perspective including spirituality and purpose, declaring on a panel “Science got us into this mess and is only as good as the questions it asks”.

RFSI Takeaways included

  • NOW is the time to invest in regeneration

  • Regenerative Food & Ag attract impact capital

  • Food brands are joining the regenerative movement

  • More Regen Tech emerging

  • Funding gaps across the system remain

Good News

Ridge to Reef” Video of Costa Rica Field Trip

Following the MRV Collective facilitations, interviews, and field trip to Rancho Margot Costa Rica earlier in the year, we produced the following video which tells the story and challenges of developing a ridge to reef approach together with Costa Rica Regenerativa, University of International Cooperation, Connect Ocean, Rancho Margot, and more

Challenges

Decline in Insect Populations Unprecedented

A new report released this month by Ecological Monographs delves into various potential explanations for the rapid decline of insects — including habitat loss and fragmentation, pesticide use, climate and extreme weather. The report also assess the ecological impact of insect decline — such as species of plants that require insects for pollination and animals which rely upon insects as a food source.

COP27 and Climate Overshadow Challenges

Edward Müller, President of The International University of Cooperation, a member of the MRV Collective reports on COP27. Like many, including the NYTimes, he starts by questioning Coca-Cola, this year’s sponsor, with a long history of plastic pollution and sugar poisons. He calls attention to a number of challenges including: biodiversity collapse and soil degradation which are being overshadowed by climate and COP27; reductionist vs holistic indigenous systems thinking — reductionist approaches lead to obsession with detached solutions such as electric vehicles, renewable energy, or removing cattle rather than addressing systemic challenges such as the nature vs human dichotomy, antiquated metrics such as GDP, unlearning practices which are entrenched by institutions and no longer serve us.
