Golden Rice joins Be RICEponsible campaign
Golden Rice gained positive feedback from guests at the National Rice Awareness Month (NRAM) exhibit at the Eastwood Mall, Quezon City on November 4-6, 2022.
“We should be proud dahil tayo ang nauna makapag produce ng Golden Rice. Maganda itong Golden Rice dahil sa beta carotene, aabangan ko ito” said Joanna Delos Santos, a student who visited the exhibit. [We should be proud as we are the first to produce Golden Rice. This is also good because of its beta carotene, I am looking forward to this.]
A similar exhibit featuring Golden Rice was held in Ayala Mall Legazpi City in celebration of NRAM. Meanwhile, Golden Rice was also featured in a cooking festival led by DA-PhilRice Isabela.
This year’s NRAM theme, Be RICEponsible, encourages every citizen to become responsible in their own ways to promote good health, help increase the income of the farmers, and achieve rice security in the Philippines.
NRAM is celebrated every November in accordance with Presidential Proclamation 524, series of 2004.

Golden Rice team reaps Dangal ng PhilRice awards
DA-PhilRice recognized the efforts and initiatives of the Golden Rice team as it landed as one of the finalists in the Excellent Performance Category during the 2022 Dangal ng PhilRice Awards for Excellence.
The award highlighted the achievements of the team from 2019 to 2021, which include the approval of the biosafety permit for food, feed, or for processing (FFP) and commercial propagation by DA-Bureau of Plant Industry in December 2019 and July 2021, respectively.
The Golden Rice team was also able to conduct multi-location field trials and preparation for varietal improvement; knowledge, attitude, and perception (KAP) study amidst the pandemic, and the mobilization of stakeholders through communication and stakeholder outreach.
The multidisciplinary team continues to work for the effective development, deployment, and communication of Golden Rice.
Another member of the Golden Rice team, Ralph Homer Ante, received recognition for Best Performance in the Service Contract category.
The awarding ceremony was held on November 4, 2022 at the Crop Biotechnology Center Plenary Hall.

Dr. Zagado shares next steps for Golden Rice at UPLB CAFS webinar
In a webinar series titled Rice Science and Technology, Dr. Ronan G. Zagado, program leader of GR-PMO, discussed the next steps for Golden Rice deployment after more than 20 years of research and regulatory assessment. The webinar was conducted by the University of the Philippines Los Baños College of Agriculture and Food Science.
“We endeavored to have an initial cultivation of Golden Rice this year and the plan is we will increase the deployment sites once more supply of seeds becomes available,” Zagado said.
Meanwhile Dr. Boby Richard R. Navarro, assistant director of Institute of Food Science and Technology, expressed his reaction after the discussion. “Indeed we can only achieve a food secure and food sustainable future through agriculture if we only link hands and hearts of farmers, researchers, academicians, and stakeholders exerting a unified effort for a common goal, which is the improvement of health and uplifting the lives in various communities across the globe,” he said.

Agusan del Sur PNC Meeting tackles Golden Rice deployment
The Provincial Nutrition Committee (PNC) led by the secretariat, the Provincial Nutrition Action Officer of Agusan del Sur Ms. Laniebelle Angchangco, convened a special meeting to discuss the formation of a sub-committee for the implementation of the Golden Rice Program in the province on November 11, 2022 at The Farmers Inn Hotel, Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur.
The agriculture, education, health, and nutrition sectors were well represented in the meeting. The Department of Education also expressed their interest in participating in next year’s dry season planting, committing some of their farming area within the school property.
Ms. Elena Bausing from the Provincial Agriculturist Office said that she will work closely with DA-PhilRice Agusan Branch Station, together with the Municipal Agriculturists and Municipal Nutrition Action Officers of Bayugan and Esperaza, to discuss the area requirements and procedures to allow the continuation of production and distribution of Golden Rice in the province and municipalities.
The formation of the sub-committee for the deployment of Golden Rice in Agusan del Sur will be included in the agenda of the official meeting of the PNC in January 2023.

GR-PMO discusses Golden Rice with BARMM stakeholders
As part of its sustained stakeholder engagement activities in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), the Golden Rice Program Management Office, in collaboration with PhilRice Midsayap Station, conducted a roundtable discussion (RTD) on November 16, 2022 at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Agrarian Reform (MAFAR) Provincial Conference Room.
The RTD was participated in by representatives from MAFAR; Ministry of Health; Bangsamoro Darul Ifta; and Office of the Member of Parliament Dr. Jojo Sinolinding. Taste-testing of cooked Golden Rice was also conducted, along with presentation of agreements on the next steps to be taken to ensure availability of Golden Rice in the region.

After two years of virtual celebration, National Biotechnology Week (NBW) is opening its doors to the public again. Hosted by the Department of Trade and Industry, the 18th NBW is anchored on the theme, “Responding to the challenges: Business opportunities in biotechnology.” The week-long exhibit and activities will be held on 21-25 November 2022 at the Philippine Trade Training Center, Pasay City.
