In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was in the beginning with God. 3All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being 4in him was life, and the life was the light of all people.  5The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.   John 1:1-15

As we prepare for the coming of the Christ child, let us do so with spiritual eyes and ears, that we may see and hear Jesus in our midst.  If Jesus is in your life, bringing you love, peace and joy, then how will you share those gifts?  Consider ways you can shine the light of Christ into the darkness of this world, sharing love, peace and joy with your neighbors, friends, co-workers and family.   Don't just think about a gift to buy for someone, but think about the greatest gift you can give, the gift of Jesus.  Here's some ways to share that gift:
  1. 1) Volunteer to help put up Christmas decorations at Tri-County Development Center  (respite care for people with special needs).    They need help on December 16, prior to a December 17 event.  Contact Amber Forrest to volunteer.  Who doesn't enjoy helping other celebrate Christmas?
  2.
  3. 2) Volunteer to help at a children's ministry or youth ministry event this month.  Contact Megan Stafford (youth) or Yolanda McCabe (children).  Who wouldn't enjoy helping children make gingerbread houses or helping the youth take gift baskets to the homebound?
  4.
  5. 3) Give a generous contribution on Christmas Eve to our mission offering for the suffering people of the Ukraine.   We will give 10% of the (non-pledged) Christmas Eve offering to the UMCOR Ukraine aid.  If you are a pledger, you must mark your gift "Ukraine" otherwise your contribution can only go to the operating budget.
  6.
  7. 4) Invite an unchurched friend, neighbor or even a total stranger to "Sing We Now of Christmas" on December 15, 7:00pm.  Everyone loves Christmas music, so invite someone new!

 New Advent Studies

It may only be September, but Advent is right around the corner! If your Sunday School class or small group is looking for a way to focus on the beginning of this new year (yes, Advent is the start of a new liturgical year!), check out some of these new studies:

· The Angels of Christmas: Hearing God’s Voice in Advent by Susan Robb

In this study, the reader will explore the visits to Zechariah, Mary, Joseph, and the shepherds and dive deep into the history of the angel Gabriel—and other angels—in the Old Testament. The Angels of Christmas uses these four angelic appearances to discuss God’s presence in history and our lives today. The messages of the angels hold meaning for listeners both then and now.

· Prepare the Way for the Lord: Advent and the Message of John the Baptist by Adam Hamilton

For centuries, Christians have turned to the story and message of John the Baptist in the weeks leading up to Christmas. In Prepare the Way for the Lord: Advent and the Message of John the Baptist, best-selling author and pastor Adam Hamilton explores the Advent themes of John’s life and ministry, and how John calls all followers of Jesus to prepare our hearts for his coming.
