Astute Students! Dynamic Dialogue!
Great Gatherings of Model UN Sessions A & B Last Saturday

120 students from 17 different area high schools participated in the first 2 of 3 Civitas Model UN events this past Saturday at Webster University. The global savvy of the delegates was evident in the wide variety of resolutions presented and the comments, questions, and amendment suggestions made by the General Assembly. Session A had an especially robust discussion about promoting World Peace by encouraging a renewal of nuclear proliferation. Session B tackled many Climate issues, especially concerning the complicated problem-solving of an issue that affects all countries, but is largely caused by wealthier nations. Points made and solutions offered closely resembled much of the news from the recent UN COP27 Climate Convention in Egypt (see links to articles about COP27 at the end of this newsletter). The afternoon ended with a contentious resolution from Russia blaming Ukraine for the ongoing conflict there. Lacking support from most countries who spoke, Russia rescinded its resolution and one delegate capped the discussion with the suggestion that Russia and Ukraine play one another in the World Cup, and the winner will get Ukraine. When all other diplomatic ideas are exhausted...

The names drawn from those who completed an evaluation were:

Session A: Jack Pirozzi (Webster Groves HS), Camille Raymo (St. Dominic), Stephen Rosenberg (Whitfield)
Session B: Penny Chen (MICDS), Reshmika Janga (Rockwood Summit), Neha Patlu (Parkway Central)

Winners each received a $15 Amazon gift credit through email. Thanks to all who completed the evaluation!

Sign up for another Roundtable Discussion on Dec. 10, 1-3 pm!
Every school year Civitas likes to provide opportunity for students from all over St. Louis and beyond to gather and talk about whatever is on their minds. We had a great discussion in September that ended with several topic suggestions uncovered because we ran out of time, including LGBTQ+ rights and income inequality in the St. Louis area and beyond. So we've scheduled a "Part 2" at Oak Bend Library on Saturday, December 10 from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm to continue the dialogue. Join us for this fun afternoon. We'll have snacks and beverages.
Click here to sign up now and earn a Game Changer point and two service hours. If there is something in particular on your mind to discuss, you can list it on the sign up form. Hope to see you there!
