We know it’s been awhile…

…since our last email.  We hope you forgive us.  Sometimes life crowds out the best of intentions and our hearts needed a break.  Tony’s took a literal one (#hatinghospitals) and Janean’s took only a figurative one (#helloprocrastination).  But we are both well recovered and getting fully back into the swing of things.   In spite of our email radio silence, we have been doing well and all things on the farm are ticking along as they should.  The frost on the ground this week (much later this year than usual) is a sign we will soon be gathering emu eggs for our incubators. This year’s chicks are almost the size of adults and are tucked away in the barn pen for the winter months.
The summer market season went well and we loved seeing everyone at the Garlic Festival this year.  The garden was a huge success and we rescued so many tomatoes before the frost that Tony is getting tired of tomatoes with every meal.   (#lovemydehydrator) We took a road trip to the AEA conference this year in Fargo, ND.  Emily got some long distance driving experience—there’s a lot of MONTANA between Washington an North Dakota—and we loved seeing the sights!  But the true gift was visiting with other folks raising emus and the great information from the AEA presentations.  We will be sharing more in the coming newsletters on what we learned about alpha-gal (my eyes were opened to the seriousness of this growing tick-borne allergy) and also about the different kinds of fats (thanks to the infamous rubber chicken presentation of Maria Minaar).
We are busy making products for the upcoming Christmas season.  Be sure to check out the free shipping code below and order early to avoid the end of December rush—we usually ship the very next day. We hope to see you at the Centralia Holiday Market this year—starting tomorrow if you want to get your Black Friday shopping fix in.   Thank you all, sincerely, for your support, especially this year and especially today, this day of thanksgiving.

Emu Meat in Stock

For those of you who have been asking, we now have emu meat back in stock.  Emu meat (at least ours) is very seasonal.  We harvest only once a year in the fall and that supply lasts through the year and usually right up to the next harvest.  However, this year we ran out of supply during the summer and we have had several inquiries.  Emu meat is a heart-healthy red meat  (#notanoxymoronanymore). Check out the nutritional comparison of emu meat below taken from the website of the AEA (#healthierthanturkey). Unfortunately we had to raise our prices this year because of increased costs of feed and processing (and transportation) so our ground emu is $13 per pound in 1 lb packages and our emu steaks are $17 per pound in cuts ranging from about .75 to 1.25 pounds per package.  All our meat is USDA processed and all packages are vacuum sealed.  Because of the huge variability in shipping depending on your location and the size of the order, you cannot purchase from the website directly.  Please give us a call for more information and we can process your order and email an invoice.

Emily’s Corner

Well if it is not one thing, it’s another. I wanted to tell you about our big scare this spring.   A serious snow storm in late March caused a power outage.  We have a generator to help us when this happens, but a breaker tripped and the power to the incubator room failed after the power came back on. All three of our incubators were full of eggs, and temperatures which are usually  kept at 97.5 degrees reached 58!!!. We honestly thought that we had lost all one hundred and eight emu eggs.  Our hearts were broken, but we kept turning the eggs anyway.

Fast forward a few weeks and one day while I am turning the eggs,  I look inside one of the incubators and I see a chick. I walked over to another and again there is another chick. I was so excited because we were so sure they had not survived.

“Mom I need your help right now as there are two cute emu chicks coming out,” was my breathless explanation as I ran into the house. We ended up hatching chicks out of most of the 9 trays.  Our hatch rate was lower, but it was still an amazing relief and we were really thankful.

I am also thankful for all the fun I had making and selling my handmade emu feather earrings at market this year.  They were a lot of fun to make and I like deciding which feathers and which beads to use for each pair.  Some are just feathers and some are feathers with different beads.  I am working on making them better and better as I learn more.

Goodbye for now until the next newsletter comes out.

 —Emily
