A surprise visit from two taiko alum kicked off the Thanksgiving holiday.

Thankful for fun surprises!

Our holiday week started with a surprise visit from two SLOT alums, and we had a blast! Retired members Rosemary Mroczkowski and Julie Marco recently stopped by the studio to share some practice time with us. We had some extra fun with a "play all songs" practice to test how much they remembered, and their taiko muscle memory did not fail as we ran through a number of our favorite songs, including our signature finale piece, Tenchi.

Above: Veterans and newer members line up for Techi. "Play all songs" practices are a great way for members to try out new parts and to revisit material that hasn't been played for awhile.

We had such a fun time reconnecting with Julie and Rosemary, and hope to do this again soon!

Support taiko this giving season

The holiday giving season is upon us and this year, we are raising money to make major repairs to our equipment. Several of our taiko have holes in the drumheads, rendering them unplayable.

This winter and spring, we will begin re-heading our chuudaiko, a labor-intensive, expensive operation, and we're asking for your support!

There are multiple ways to donate: You can make a direct donation at stltaiko.com with a debit / credit card or Paypal. You can also make one-time or recurring donations through Facebook. And if you set up recurring donations, Facebook will match 100% of your donation after you make your second donation - up to $100 per donation - to make an even greater impact.

We appreciate your support!

Meet Hollis Moore

How'd you first get involved with taiko?
Someone fed me near the front door, so I've been hanging around the studio ever since.... just kidding. I studied Japanese for about 12 years and danced bon odori at the Japanese Festival, and of course I saw the drummers.... the rest is history.

What do you like about it?
Taiko is such a release, it really adds joy to my life every time I do it. It's never a real bummer or bother, even when I'm stressed and overwhelmed, I still always look forward to going to taiko. I love the people in the group. Also hitting things with sticks is good practice for teaching children.

Do you have a favorite taiko song? What do you like about it?
It's probably DRIVE. It's the first song I felt like I really had a personal connection to the feeling behind it. While I haven't been in med school, as a teacher working two jobs, enrolled in grad school and code camp, I really relate to the frantic energy. I love the way things layer on and how we play with the symmetry... plus I like screaming!

What would you say to others considering taking a taiko class?
Do it! At least once! It's an amazing experience and I can't recommend it enough! The people are nice, the class is fun, and you'll be shocked what you can do by the end! (Play an awesome song!)

What do you like to do outside of taiko?
Draw, paint, read, watch movies, astronomy, poetry, study languages, research, game design.... I don't like sleeping or resting, apparently.
We are a non-profit group that performs the art of taiko around the St. Louis area and the world.
