Little Shop of Horrors

Hello lovely people! This is a brief edition of Musings to put a few lovely Little Shop of Horrors items on your radar. I've been wrestling with the collaboration between Howard Ashman and Alan Menken this month, and the following three items have been a delight.

I had the pleasure of revisiting the current Off-Broadway revival of Little Shop of Horrors during Halloweekend, and was blown away by the performances of Lena Hall as Audrey and Rob McClure as Seymour. Both were giving career definitive performances. While McClure has sadly moved on from the production already, their chemistry was preserved in this video of the pair performing "Suddenly Seymour". It is like McClure was born to play the nebbish botanist, and Hall the insecure beauty.
Broadway Nation, a podcast hosted by David Armstrong that explores the strides outsiders have made in the American musical, released two wonderful podcast episodes all about Little Shop of Horrors at the end of October and the beginning of November.

Author Adam Abraham released a cultural history of Little Shop back in September, titled Attack of the Monster Musical, and it is a delight to listen to him and Armstrong discuss how such an improbable show came together, and the legacy it has left since premiering forty years ago. I highly, highly recommend these podcast episodes, and I'm picking up a copy of Abraham's book this weekend to learn even more insights!
Episode 84: Attack Of The Monster Musical, part 1
Episode 85: RETURN OF THE MONSTER MUSICAL!

All my love, always,
Margaret Hall
