We Will Celebrate the Life of Beth Anderson

We will gather to celebrate Beth Anderson's life and to inter her remains in the Memorial Garden. Friends are invited to participate and to share memories of Beth and fellowship with one another. The memorial meeting will be blended and the Zoom link can be found here.

Note: We still need volunteers to contribute finger foods 
for the reception that will follow the memorial meeting.

And for Next Generations... 

For the younger children, ages 0 through kindergarten, the Nursery opens from 10 a.m. to 11:30 each Sunday in the white house.

Children in 1st through 5th grades and Young Friends worship with their families (and all of us) from 10 to 10:20 and then go to their classes with their teachers. 

We are still looking for one paid worker and one more volunteer for the Nursery.  Here is the job description for the paid position.

Meeting for Business Coming Up Next Sunday

Our next meeting for worship for the conduct of business will be at 12:15 on November 13.  Please plan to enjoy pot-luck at the meetinghouse or at home and then to join in worship as we turn our attention to business.  Carole Hoage will serve as Interim Clerk while Marcy Seitel recovers from surgery.  If you have items that are prepared for the agenda, please contact Carole Hoage (via Breeze).

A Gathering in the Memorial Garden

On Saturday November 19 at 2 pm, Friends will gather to inter Mosi Harrington's ashes in the Memorial Garden.  The family invites Friends from Adelphi meeting to be with them for this occasion.

Supporting Reproductive Justice

Following Meeting’s acceptance of our Minute, Peace and Social Concerns and the Reproductive Justice Working Group would like to build on this excellent beginning by, among other steps, working on our compilation of resources for those in need. The Working Group’s next meeting will be November 21st on Zoom. We invite all interested members of AFM to join us. For more information please contact Sharon Stout via Breeze. 

In addition, we are working hard with members of other Meetings to reinvigorate the BYM Working Group. A Zoom meeting to help get that process rolling has been scheduled for November 16th, and, again, all interested individuals are invited. Sharon is also the point of contact for that effort.

Friends Community School

The weekly bulletin is here. Head of School Angela Garcia took an interesting lesson from her opportunity to go trick-or-treating with two Italian children, who were not at all frightened by the eerie decorations and sounds.  Sometimes, she realized, old things need to be seen with a fresh view.

Celebrating the Life of Stephen McNeil

Stephen McNeil was an active part of Adelphi Meeting many years ago; some of us still remember Stephen from those days. His life his been centered in Berkeley in recent decades, where he worked for the American Friends Service Committee. He passed away in June and was celebrated even as he passed by a wide circle of Friends from all over the country.  Now his meeting is holding a memorial meeting for worship on November 19 at 4 p.m. (eastern time).  To attend by Zoom, please contact Ruth Flower (via Breeze) who can connect you with the organizers in Strawberry Creek Meeting.  About Stephen.

November is Native American Heritage Month
 

See its announcement of featured photographers, artists, linguists, historians and story tellers, and the challenge these artists face balancing heritage with cultures that continue to inform their visions of Indigenous people today.

Smithsonian writers remind us all that Indigenous American culture is not a monolith: There are currently 574 federally recognized Native nations — each with unique languages, beliefs, and lifeways that have been passed down through generations — and millions of Americans who engage in traditional practices and create new ways to express their heritage and identity.
 

Teaching Children about Honoring Native American Heritage - Historical and Present Day

It's important to get history right, and to relearn it from the people who were involved when we realize that we got it wrong.  In helping children to understand more about Indigenous peoples, it is at least equally important to read books together about Indigenous people in the present day Rebekah Gienapp, educator and author of Raising Antiracist Kids, has compiled and shared a list of 15  Indigenous children's books that match the recommendations of Dr. Debbie Reese (Nambe Pueblo), founder of American Indians in Children's Literature.

Baltimore's American Indian "Reservation"

"Baltimore is home to a large urban American Indian community. The city is within of the ancestral homelands of the Piscataway and Susquehannock peoples, and a diverse range of other American Indians have passed through or lived here. In the mid-20th century, thousands of members of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina and other tribal nations migrated to Baltimore seeking manufacturing, construction and other jobs. They settled on the east side of town in an area that bridges the neighborhoods of Upper Fells Point and Washington Hill. Here, they created a vibrant, intertribal American Indian community that they call their "reservation."

Ashlee Minner (Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina) researched and wrote a history of this area in Baltimore, enriched by the memories of an increasing number of elders whom she consulted. Her story, "A Tour of Baltimore's American Indian "Reservation" is published here in American Indian, the magazine of the National Museum of the American Indian.

A set of four related cases are coming up for oral argument in the U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday, November 9 at 10 a.m.  There's a brief description of the law and the challenges -- and the danger of those challenges - here on the Decolonizing Quakers web page, and more background in an excellent article by Mary Annette Pember in Indian Country Today. Keep an eye on the news - these cases could be decided in a way that would not only damage Native children, but also endanger respect for tribal sovereignty.

Afghan Women's Fund (AWF)

The AWF newsletter provides updates on the realities of living under Taliban rule, and several projects that the AWF is supporting. The organization is finding careful ways to get donations directly to Afghan women's projects, and asks for our support.

Rising from the Ashes:

A BYM Programmed Meeting Toward
Connection and Repair of the Harms of Racism

Friends will gather on December 3rd from 12 to 4 pm to acknowledge and honor the pain of racism experienced by Friends of Color within our Yearly Meeting, to help White Friends see their complicity in that pain, and to take the next steps on the road to repair of our beloved community. The gathering will be at Stony Run Meeting and on Zoom.  Learn more and register here. 
 

Quakers and Peace - in These Times 

Alexander Barnes learned from the Quaker U.N. Office that the Friends World Committee for Consultation and several other national and international Quaker organizations issued a statement on the Peace Testimony and Ukraine in October.  The statement reminds us that we are called through the peace testimony not only to refuse to kill, but also to relieve suffering, to build the institutions of peace and to support peacebuilding and remove the causes of war.  Alexander also found a way to stay in touch with Friends in Kyiv - through Facebook. A Friend posted there the news that on October 13, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) unanimously declared Russia a terrorist regime, becoming the first international organization to do so..
