Don’t Forget to Renew Your Certificate of Competency with Alberta Municipal Affairs

If you have completed the 2021 SOP Update Training, you still need to apply to Alberta Municipal Affairs to renew your Certificate of Competency.  To renew your Certificate of Competency, submit a copy of your training documents to Municipal Affairs at safety.services@gov.ab.ca along with the application form found at https://www.alberta.ca/private-sewage-standata.aspx. Safety Codes Officers should submit copies of their documents to the Safety Codes Council as a component of required training compliance.

Alberta Municipal Affairs extended the date by which people need to have completed their SOP Update training.  Although Certificates of Competency expired October 31, as long as the contractor has completed their update by the end of February 2023, their CoC will be reinstated.

Member Benefits

There are lots of reasons to be a member of WCOWMA and its provincial chapters. In this recurring section of the newsletter we'll highlight some of the many benefits.

If you're not already a member, you can sign up here.
Locate A Pro
The WCOWMA website, and its provincial chapters, feature a Locate-A-Pro tab where our members are listed by the type of work they do, and the region they work in. This is an excellent resource for those looking for their services. For homeowners it is a great way to find an installer or maintenance provider; for those working in the industry it’s a great place to find a manufacturer or supplier.

If you are a member of WCOWMA, you should be listed in Locate A Pro. Why not take a minute to review your listing? If you see any errors, please let us know so we can ensure your listing is up-to-date.

This year's theme is Under Pressure and we have a great line-up of speakers and topics that you won't want to miss.

Vendors: exhibit in our trade show hall.

Delegates: participate in our continuing education program.

More information to be announced soon.

Keep an eye on our website and monthly newsletter
for more details.

Industry Survey – Saskatchewan

Saskatchewan Ministry of Health has reached out to SOWMA to gather information from industry as they undertake a review of the Private Sewage Works Regulation and the Shoreline Pollution Control Regulation.

A survey of this nature was first undertaken in 2017/2018 and that data was used to inform changes that the industry was hoping to see in the regulatory framework at the same time the 2018 Saskatchewan Onsite Wastewater Disposal Guide was released, however the regulations were not updated in conjunction with the release of the SOWDG as had been expected.

Unfortunately, once COVID became the primary focus, work on the regulatory framework for private sewage was set aside. That work is now being revived and a survey will help to determine the state of the industry in the four years since the new SOWDG was released.

If you are practicing in Saskatchewan, and have not yet completed the short survey, please contact Adrienne in our office at 855-872-2650.

Computer Tip

Browser Trouble

When you want to look up something on the internet, you click into your browser, tap a few buttons and you are off to the races. Unless you aren't.

Sometimes our browser fails us, but why?

1. The website might not be compatible with your browser. There are different browsers, and while you likely have a preference, it might not be properly interacting with the website. If you are using Google Chrome, try Microsoft Edge, Firefox, or one of several other options. You likely have one already installed on your computer, but if not, you can download and install one. Then give that website another go.

2. You have too many cookies. I'm referring, of course, to the packets of data that make accessing frequently used websites faster. Sometimes, though, your browser can get bogged down with cookies, decreasing a website's performance speed. In that case you'll want to clear the cookies out. A quick Google search will tell you how to do it with your preferred web browser.

3. You haven't restarted your browser (or computer!) for too long. When was the last time you closed your web browser out? Or shut down your computer? If you are having trouble with your internet browsing, a simple restart of the program or computer could do the trick.

There could be other reasons as well, but these three tricks should help you most of the time. Happy web surfing!
