November 2022 Gallery Newsletter
Autumn is here, and we've had our first snow in Santa Fe while Scottsdale continues with a warm sunny 70 degrees! This is such a great time of year to visit either location! The end of the year is a busy one in both galleries! As today is November 11, I want to wish "Happy Veteran's Day" to those who have served and thank them. This Saturday Jason Garcia will be in the Santa Fe gallery for his "Hero Stories" showing of new clay works. Ty Moquino will be in the gallery in early December with new Masks. Arthur Lopez has also made a collection of smaller Santos that will be online at the end of the month.
In January, Jared Tso and his partner, Alexandria Bipatnath, will be in our Santa Fe gallery for "Enaabadiziwaad Ats'aa" or "How the Vessel is Used," a combination of Chef Alexandrea presenting a Native American food tasting with original Native recipes, and new clay works by Jared inspired by utilitarian vessels. Then it's time for our shows to begin in Scottsdale in February!
I want to thank everyone for their continued support of the gallery and the artists we represent. It has made a significant difference to continue to show fantastic art over the past two and a half decades! That is a long time to have such continued connections with many people. Thank you!
Each day we will continue to add our New Additions to the website. I hope you continue to enjoy it!

This past month we had a group of Boy Scouts into our Scottsdale gallery. I had a chance to talk to them about Native pottery to help them achieve their Art and American Culture Merit Badges. It was a lot of fun, and great seeing a new generation inspired by art!

If you are at the Heard Museum this winter, check out the spectacular new "Elegant Vessels: A Century of Southwest Silver Boxes." It is a collection of over 100 silver boxes, and my photos don't even begin to do the exhibit justice! It really is spectacular!

Congrats to Arthur Lopez, who is one of the recipients of the New Mexico Governor's Award! This is always a prestigious honor in New Mexico, and we are pleased to have his work in our galleries!

Congrats to Stephanie Tafoya (Santa Clara) on her marriage to Keegan Parker. They were married this October in Italy. You may know Stephanie for her exceptional pottery or have met her in our Santa Fe gallery. Best Wishes to them both for their future ahead!

Saturday, November 12 is "Hero Stories" with new works by Jason Garcia (Santa Clara). The show will be in our Santa Fe gallery, and Jason will be in attendance from 1-3 pm. He will be talking about his recent works from 1:30 -2:30. Stop by if you are in the Santa Fe area!

Chase Kawinhut Earles (Caddo) is known for his Ingenious Futurism. This large piece above is entitled "Land Back." Chase says of this piece: "I was inspired by growing up in Oklahoma and El Reno around trains, graffiti, and living in Atlanta, seeing all the graffiti there. This piece represents the fall of machines of war. This is illustrated by Native arrows either taking down the bull or being shot at the fallen offender, then graffitied with "Land Back" and my given Caddo name, "Kahwinhut." The entire piece includes a spout because it is a Caddo effigy pot. A modern interpretation of vessels our ancestors would create to represent things found in their environment...or now in our inner city life."

Russell Sanchez (San Ildefonso) has been reviving San Ildefonso polychrome pottery since 2005. This new jar takes inspiration from the work of his great-grandmother Ignaica Sanchez (b.1865). The jar by Ignacia is in the back, and Russell's new jar is in front. Ignacia was the mother of potter Ramona Sanchez and painter Abel Sanchez (Russell's grandfather). Russell's news jar has a similar shape and uses open space for his designs. On this jar, when you look down on it, there is a flower design! In addition, there are 146 stones inset into the jar! As Russell says, "Tradition means moving forward and adding to it. You keep moving forward. If we stayed stagnant we would no longer exist."
