Japanese Encephalitis Virus (JEV)
The Victorian and NSW governments have expanded eligibility criteria for free JEV vaccination to include people aged two months or older who live or routinely work in any of the following local government areas of Albury, Campaspe, Gannawarra, Greater Shepparton, Indigo, Loddon, Mildura, Moira, Swan Hill, Wodonga, Towong, Benalla, Wangaratta and Strathbogie AND:
- Spend significant time outdoors (four hours per day), for unavoidable work, recreational, educational or other essential activities OR
- Are living in temporary or flood damaged accommodation (e.g. camps, tents, dwellings exposed to the external environment) that place them at increased risk of exposure to mosquitoes OR
- Are engaged in the prolonged outdoor recovery efforts (clean up) of stagnant waters following floods.
Vaccination can be administered after arrival in flood affected areas to those from other regions deployed for prolonged recovery efforts.
Due to restricted stock, JE vaccine orders will be limited. If you require vaccine exceeding orders limits, please email immunisation@health.vic.gov.au
NSW Health has authorised Nurse/Midwife Immunisers to administer JEV vaccines. Completion of this training is mandatory prior to administration - Japanese encephalitis: A resource for registered nurses and midwives.
The vaccine is free for eligible people and general practices are encouraged to bulk bill for the service whenever possible.
Providers of the vaccine in the Murray PHN region can be found here and local public health units are also providing JEV vaccines. Please call ahead to ensure stock is on hand and note some sites will be closed due to floods.
Monkeypox (MPX)
Eligibility for the MPX vaccine has been expanded and supply of vaccines has increased across Victoria. The second dose is now available for those who received their first dose more than 28 days ago. The vaccine is free and available through local public health units in the Murray PHN region. Clinicians should test for MPX in all patients presenting with compatible symptoms.
