OCTOBER NEWSLETTER

Kufadza

CLZ and DNPW are excited to announce that another nine women recently graduated and will become part of Zambia’s first all-female Community Scout Unit—Kufadza. Alongside Rodgers Fumpa, CLZ's Data Management Officer, these ladies went through a strenuous and extensive training with DNPW in Kafue National Park. They will now return to begin their work in the Lower Zambezi.

Thank you to CITES MIKE for supporting this initiative and to Lion Recovery Fund and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for supporting capacity building for those who are helping to protect Zambia’s natural heritage.

Aerial Operations

At the peak of this year's dry season, DNPW and CLZ took advantage of the thin foliage to conduct aerial operations. This opportunity allowed for the strategic deployment of teams to intercept poachers, conduct surveillance of potential poachers camps and routes, as well as the identification of strategic water points.

Thank you to FZS and INL for supporting this initiative.

CBU Intern

Every year hosts interns and recently, CLZ welcomed Lanos Chisaka at Basecamp. His research involves livestock predation in the local communities. This internship will fulfil a requirement for his studies at the Copperbelt University where he is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Wildlife Management.

Thank you to Olsen Animal Trust for supporting Lanos alongside several other deserving youth as part of CLZ’s scholarship programme.

Environmental Education Programme

This October was a busy month for CLZ's Environmental Education Manager who conducted two School Visits for students from the villages of Chinyunyu and Chiawa as well as one Outreach Visit to Chiawa village. During the School Visits, 59 students visited CLZ Basecamp and the Outreach Visit reached 249 children.

Pangolin Tracking

Wildlife Crime Prevention (WCP)'s Protect the Pangolin Programme, CLZ, and DNPW are working together to monitor pangolins post-release to determine the success of rehabilitation and release. This month, two representatives from the partnering organisations attended a training on monitoring techniques in Kenya.

The training was held at Kenya Wildlife Service in Nairobi as well as in the Masai Mara National Reserve and was conducted by The Pangolin Project. The training included on the ground experience in pangolin restraint and attaching tracking devices in the field as well as tracking pangolins in the field.

Thank you to Tusk for supporting the collaboration, exchange trip and the training of WCP and CLZ staff.
