Newcomers Brunch November 13th 11:30 am

On several Sundays in the year we like to welcome newer folks who have become part of our community here at St. Barnabas. On Sunday, November 13th at 11:30 am we will do just that at both of our morning services. In addition, after the 10am service we will have a catered lunch outside in the Courtyard where newcomers can meet one another and ask their questions of the Rector. Please let us know if you consider yourself a newcomer at St. Barnabas’ and would like to be included in this lunch.

Lay Preaching Course Applications Open
for 2023 Cohorts in Spanish & English

The Diocese of El Camino Real School for ministry is now in partnership with the dioceses of Northern California and San Diego as The West Coast Collaborative. There are big plans for 2023 including the development and launch of a program for individuals preparing for ordination as Deacons. We are currently accepting applications for our course opening in the winter of 2023 to prepare individuals to apply for a Lay Preaching license. Similar to 2022, we are forming cohorts of students in Spanish and English and seeking adult learners of all ages and educational backgrounds who are actively involved in ministry in their congregations and demonstrate gifts in lay leadership.

Who is this for? Lay members of our congregations with gifts for preaching and leadership in ministry.

What will we study? Biblical exegesis and preaching theory and practice.

Where will we meet? On Zoom

When will we meet? Once each month on a weekday evening

What else will I need to do? Prepare for each Zoom session by watching video lectures and completing assigned reading and written reflections before we meet.

How much time will the preparation take? Every student is different but at least 4 - 12 hours per month

What if English is not my first language? We are currently designing the program for speakers of Spanish and English. If you need support in another language please contact us.

How long is the course? 12 Months (February 2023 - January 2024)

What will it cost? $180 and scholarships will be available. Congregations will be encouraged partner in supporting their students if needed. The intention is for this to be an affordable opportunity for any students who show the gifts for lay preaching and leadership.

Is there anything else? The course will culminate in an in-person preaching retreat

How do I apply?
  1. Click here to fill out the online application
  2. Request a letter of recommendation from your Rector/Vicar/Priest in Charge.

Friday afternoon Centering Prayer at 4pm
Our Centering Prayer Ministry is a small ecumenical group meeting weekly to study Christian mysticism and practice contemplative methods of prayer, primarily using the Centering Prayer method as taught by Fr. Thomas Keating OCSO and The Rev. Cynthia Bourgeault, an Episcopal priest.

After first gathering for a few minutes we practice our 20 minutes of silent Centering Prayer. Following the practice we will be reading and discussing a passage from Evelyn Underhill, a modern spiritual writer. We’ll be using Grace Through Simplicity, an edited collection of her prayers and reflections.

We meet EVERY Friday from 4 - 5 pm using ZOOM.

Thoughts from the Loft
(Things I learned this week)
The first Book of Common Prayer was approved in 1549. That's a while ago. In true church fashion there was a revision that was approved only three years later in 1552. Apparently there were extensive updates and changes, some of which included, "The exorcism, annointing, the chrism, and triple immersion were omitted from the Baptism service." Just under seven years later a third Book of Common Prayer was approved in 1559 and somehow that one lasted over a hundred years until 1662. Although the Puritans outlawed it 1645. I wonder what folks did for those 17 years...
