Community Meeting on Coastal Flooding Vulnerability & Risk Assessment

Please join Whatcom County Public Works on Saturday, November 19th for a community meeting to learn more about the Whatcom County Coastal and Riverine Compound Flood Vulnerability & Risk Assessment project. The goals of the project are to better understand the compounding effects of riverine and coastal flooding along Whatcom County’s shoreline. Results will be used to inform policies and plans to build community resilience to sea level rise and flooding. We invite you to come learn about sea level rise and flooding projections, speak with the project team, and share your observations and priorities on flooding along Whatcom County’s marine shorelines and lower Nooksack riverine shorelines.

The meeting will be held on November 19th from 1-3pm at Birch Bay State Park in the BP Heron Center (7290 Birch Bay Drive, Blaine, WA). Discover Passes are required for parking at State Parks. If you own a Discover Pass, please plan on bringing it with you. There will be limited day passes to share.

Flood Management on Farmland

Join Gavin Willis, from Whatcom Family Farmers, on Wednesday, November 16th from 12-12:30pm via Zoom to learn about updates on work being done on farmland to address flooding, improve riparian habitat, and promote healthy waterways for salmon. 

The presentation will incorporate perspectives from a range of projects and local entities, including the Ag Water Board, and will also include a sneak peek at the first of a 3-part video series highlighting changes in the way that watershed management is being tackled in Whatcom County.

Quarterly Advisory Committee Meeting

The next meeting of the BBWARM Advisory Committee will be held on January 18th from 6-8pm (location TBD). The general public is invited to join us, and a public comment period will be held at the beginning of the meeting.

The Birch Bay Watershed and Aquatic Resources Management (BBWARM) District is the stormwater management district for the Birch Bay watershed managed by the Whatcom County Public Works Stormwater Division and a citizen advisory committee.  BBWARM was established by the Whatcom County Council to address citizen concerns about water quality, flooding, and the loss of aquatic habitat.  Visit our website to learn about BBWARM programs, history, and funding.
