Mental Health Week (MHW) 2022 in Tasmania was held between 8 October and 16 October. Part of a national mental health promotion campaign held in October each year, MHW incorporates World Mental Health Day, held globally on 10 October.

The theme was ‘Awareness, Belonging, Connection’, and we saw so many organisations and businesses embracing this! More than 80 events were held across the state, engaging Tasmanian communities in activities that promote mental health and wellbeing, and raising awareness and understanding about mental illness and the value of good mental health and self-care.

Thank you to all who got involved and supported MHW 2022, and we can't wait to bring it back bigger and better next year!

Anglicare Tasmania and partners present the Reframing Addiction Conference, a two-day professional development and capacity building opportunity for those in the Health and Community services sector working with and supporting people affected by addiction including gambling and alcohol and other drugs.

The conference features leading national keynote speakers and plenary discussions. For the most up to date list of speakers and plenary discussions visit anglicare-tas.org.au/reframing-addiction

It aims to encourage and share the voice of people with lived experience, enhance community and service partnerships, and highlight the latest ways Tasmanians can come together to bring addiction out of the shadows.

Most of us know or have supported someone living with addiction. We know that addiction is often misunderstood, hidden and damages peoples lives every day. The resulting stigma and discrimination is just as damaging.

Join us as we take action, share stories, create partnerships and foster conversation around addiction in our communities.

It's time to talk, share, support and reframe the way we think about addiction.

Where: paranaple convention centre, 137 Rooke Street Devonport, TAS 7310

Continuation of NewAccess for Small Business Owners
The NewAccess for Small Business Owners (NASBO) service will continue to 31 December 2024, following the inclusion of extension funding in the recent federal Budget.

The Commonwealth’s commitment to continue NASBO comes at a critical time for small business owners who are facing increasing economic pressures, staffing shortages, and the ongoing impacts of natural disasters and the pandemic. The Money and Mental Health Social Research Report commissioned by the Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC) in partnership with Beyond Blue, confirmed small business owners are already more likely to experience financial challenges and poor mental health.

Since its launch in March 2021, NASBO has supported more than 2,700 small business owners around the country. Seven out of ten people who used the service show a significant reduction in depression and anxiety symptoms against clinically validated measures.

If you would like further information about NASBO or a stakeholder engagement pack, please contact Product Manager Greta Vella on (03) 9020 3611 or email greta.vella@beyondblue.org.au.

During February-June this year COTA Tasmania undertook state-wide consultation activities across lutruwita, Tasmania, focusing on people’s experiences of ageing and what needs to be considered, funded and to influence future policy directions.

Over 1,500 community members had their say as part of our H.E.A.R Active Ageing Consultation and this lived experience will shape the development of a new six-year Active Ageing strategy for Tasmania 2023-2029.

The consultation report was launched on 3rd November by the Minister for Community Services and Development, the Honourable Nic Street MP at Golden Wattle Café, Glenorchy.

Do you support or provide care to someone who has attempted suicide?

In Australia and globally, suicide and suicide attempt remains a significant public health concern. Recent research estimates that 65,000 people attempt suicide in Australia every year, affecting families, friends, and communities.

We know that loved ones, family members and friends provide most of the practical and emotional support to those who have attempted suicide. At the same time, this support role is often fulfilling but can also be challenging and stressful for caregivers.

Whilst there is a growing range of programs and resources for the person who has attempted suicide, there is limited research on the needs of those who provide care and support. As a result, very few programs and resources specifically focus on caregivers of a person who has attempted suicide.

Our friends at Everymind are trialling a new tailored program to support families and friends who care for someone who has attempted suicide.

The short, self-paced program includes two core modules and a range of complementary optional mini-modules that focus on the needs, experiences and challenges of caregiving.

The Minds Together program for family and friends supporting someone who has attempted suicide is free to access and delivered online, for caregivers to complete at a time and place convenient to them.

Mindfulness Programs are aimed at reducing stress, anxiety and depression and increasing the wellbeing of all adult Tasmanians. Participants report feeling less reactive, calmer and with a greater understanding of themselves and how to respond to life’s challenges.

These programs are free and supported by Primary Health Tasmania under the Australian Government’s Primary Health Networks Program, however eligibility requirements apply. They are designed for adult Tasmanians experiencing or at risk of mild to moderate stress, anxiety or depression.

Outdoor counsellor tackling eco-anxiety from beachside 'office' in southern Tasmania
Ms Grant specialises in climate anxiety and believes taking the conversation outdoors is an immediate reminder of what the effort to tackle climate change is for. "What I see happening in the community is helplessness, people giving up because now things have got so bad, they don't think they can contribute anymore."

How to take care of yourself when racial attacks make headlines
Stories of racist attacks are all too common, and seeing those stories in the news can be deeply confronting. So how can you take care of yourself when these incidents — including abuse directed against Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people — make headlines?

More Australians turning to exercise to maintain mental health, but a growing number are ditching it altogether
A record number of Australians may be dropping exercise down their life priority list but many more appear to be seeing its broader benefits, according to the annual, 20,000-person AusPlay survey of the country's exercise habits. Almost one-in-three Australian adults are now motivated to exercise to maintain their mental wellness.

Tasmanian Communications Charter

Did you know that Tasmania was the first state to adopt the National Communications Charter?

The Charter brings the community sector together with government and people with lived experience, promoting a common language around mental health, mental illness and suicide in Tasmania, so that together we can work to reduce stigma and promote help-seeking behaviour.

The Charter website includes a short, free online training module that will guide you throguh The Charter, and help you talk about mental health and suicide in a way that is safe, free from stigma and encourages help seeking behaviour.

MHCT has a diverse membership of community organisations and individuals and is always open to new members who want to engage further with the mental health sector in Tasmania.
