Greetings everyone,

This month we will hear about the perils of overzealous advocacy. Many of us advocate for our clients daily, but when is it going too far? What are the limits? What does the California Bar have to say on the topic? With us this month is attorney Raquelle de la Rocha, an experienced litigator and ethics expert who has prosecuted attorney discipline as Trial Counsel at the California State Bar. Raquelle has also taught full time at UCLA School of Law, and served in various government oversight positions centered around ethics.

As usual, we will start with a brief Q&A/update from the Bench. If you have questions for the Court, or for YCBA, you can email me at president@yolobar.com.

Two other quick items:
- Please save the date of Friday, January 13, 2023, for our "pre pandemic" annual Meet the Judges event. The catered lunch event will be held at noon in Woodland.
- Yolo Superior Court will have a modified calendar on December 23 and 30. Please see schedule here.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Remote Appearances: The new local rule on remote appearance in Yolo Superior Court is available here.

COVID Restrictions dropped:
Effective March 14th, the Court will be dropping COVID restrictions, including as follows:
  • Masks will not be required (but of course are allowed);
  • All judicial officers will hear cases in their own departments, including jury hardship screening (Commissioner Hohenwarter will move back to D2 for her entire calendar);
  • Social distancing markers and plexiglass will be removed; and
  • Jurors will be able to sit in the jury box rather than dispersed throughout the courtroom.
Optional remote appearance will continue, in accordance with Local Rule 2.4.
