Penny Wars 2022: We have a winner!

Congratulations to our Director of Music Becky Graybeal on her Penny Wars win! Her fellow contestant (and husband) Brian, Wesley's Youth Leader, will get a pie in the face after church this Sunday November 13.

In our penny wars, we collected nearly 8,000 pennies (plus other cash and change), and raised over $300 to support relationship-building and faith-forming activities through our "Year of the Table" program.

What's new in this edition of the Weekly E-news...

Luminaria Night - December 10

Join us -- and neighbors from all throughout Bethlehem -- for Luminaria Night 2022! Luminaria night is a beautiful evening when we line neighborhoods and streets with luminaria (white paper bags with lit candles). All luminaria proceeds benefit New Bethany Ministries in Bethlehem. Since 1985, New Bethany has impacted over 140,000 lives by offering hope and support to people who experience poverty, hunger, and homelessness.

Help us join in the effort as we light up our church property with luminaria! Make a donation to purchase a luminaria kit (each $10 donation consists of ten white paper bags, ten votive candles, and ten cups of sand). Then join us on December 10 at 4 PM as we set up our luminaria here at the church.

To make a donation and purchase a kit, visit our church's luminaria order page.
For more information, visit our church website or contact our church's "block captain," Deb Silliman
Luminaria Rain Date: December 17, 2022

From the Church Library:

We have more fiction selections available in the library. Check out these featured titles:

WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING by Delia Owens is a coming-of-age murder mystery that takes place in the coastal marshlands of North Carolina. Kya, the protagonist, who lives alone in the marshes, is known as “The Marsh Girl” by the local townspeople. Meanwhile, she survives by her wits and studies the plants and creatures that are her companions in this unique eco-system. Things get complicated when she begins to develop relationships with several people in town.

THE SHADOW LAND by Elizabeth Kostova - In a totally different vein, Alexandra, a young American woman, travels to Bulgaria to recover from the loss of her brother. When she accidentally acquires someone else’s luggage & finds in it an urn of human ashes, she sets off on a journey to return them to the family—which turns out to be a darker and more convoluted task than she anticipated.

What's coming up...

"The Game of Rent" at First Pres

Our neighbors at First Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem (2344 Center St.) invite you to join them on Tuesday November 15 at 7 PM for an eye-opening experience of "The Game of Rent." This program will focus on affordable housing -- an issue that confronts countless neighborhoods and families here in Bethlehem and across our country. "The Game of Rent" is a board game-style simulation designed to spark productive conversation. In the words of its creators: “using local data (we’ll be using a version specially designed for the Lehigh Valley) and the luck of the draw, the Game helps build empathy and awareness around housing issues.”
If you have questions, please contact First Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem via email. If you plan to attend, please click here to register

Grow in Generosity - Pledge 2023

At Wesley Church, our life-changing ministries could not take place without your support. We are grateful for your generosity! It is our hope that you will not only continue that support in the coming year, but that you will also make a plan -- a pledge -- to do so.

Pledging materials have been sent through the mail. We invite you to review them, pray about your plans, and bring (or mail) your completed pledge card to the church by Sunday November 20. If you did not receive pledge materials this year, please contact the church office.

Stuffing Throwdown

The star of the Thanksgiving table isn't the turkey -- it's the stuffing! This year, we're celebrating all things "stuffing" by crowning Wesley's first Stuffing Throwdown Champion!

To enter, sign up using the link below. (If you want to help with set-up or clean-up, please use the same link.) Prepare a casserole dish of your signature stuffing and bring it to church on Sunday November 20. Our taste-testers (our whole church family!) will blind-taste the entries and vote for their favorite. The winner will receive a special prize -- and some serious bragging rights! But sign up soon... entries in this year's throwdown is limited to the first eight contestants who sign up! Sign up here, or contact the church office. The deadline to sign up is Sunday November 13.

Meals for BES

This year, our church will once again be supporting the work of the Bethlehem Emergency Shelter (BES) -- and you can help make it happen! Once each month, we provide hot meals, monitor the shower schedule, and offer a loving presence to the guests of the shelter. We will be serving our first meal on Monday, November 21. We'll be at the shelter from 4 PM to 9 PM, but shorter shifts are available to fit your schedule. To get involved, please contact our coordinator Becky Hess.

Connect Sessions

Are you new to Wesley and eager to get involved in ministry? We hope you'll join us for a series of "Connect Sessions" on Sunday November 20, November 27, and December 4 at 11:15 AM in the church library. In this three-part series, you'll have the opportunity to learn more about our congregation, about the United Methodist tradition, and about the many ministries through which you can use your gifts. For those interested in joining the church, our "connect sessions" also serve as our new member class. For more information, or to sign up, please email Pastor Candy.

Christmas Decorations

Before long, it will be time to decorate for Christmas! Our church Christmas "decorating days" will take place on Thanksgiving weekend:
  • Friday November 25: 2 PM to 5 PM (bring decorations out from storage)
  • Saturday November 26: 11 AM to 3 PM (decorate the sanctuary and atrium -- lunch provided!)
To participate, please use our online signup. Your help will make such a difference this holiday season!

Deepen your faith this Advent with our 2022 Advent Study! This year, we'll be studying Amy-Jill Levine's Light of the World: A Beginner's Guide to Advent. Deborah Appler will lead this year's Advent study, which will take place on Sundays in Advent (November 27, December 4, 11, & 18) at 9:00 AM in the Chapel.
