On Sunday, the Open and Affirming Team and Celebrating God's Love Committee co-host the Transgender Day of Remembrance and Candle Lightening Service. Everyone will be invited to lighten the candle for the trans and gender non-binary siblings we lost in the past year. There are 67 names and stories that we hold sacred in our hearts. Our neighbor, Brave Space Alliance, also invites us to the “Trans Weekend of Resilience” event, from November 18 to 20 (details see below).
We will make sandwiches next Wednesday (November 16). All are welcome to join this ministry. Northern Illinois Conference (UMC) will have a new bishop next year. We received a postcard from the More Light Presbyterians. And the Hyde Park and Kenwood Interfaith Council will host the Interfaith Thanksgiving Celebration on November 24. "Happy Birthday" to Georgella J. Nelson (November 13th) and Suneeta Brooker - Solesi (November 19th) May the both of you  have all the love your heart can hold, all the happiness a day can bring, and all the blessings a life can unfold. Happy birthday!
Our November Special Offering goes to Experimental Food Station - Market Box. Market Box crowd-funds to bulk-buy produce from across the midwest, and distributes over 420 bags of food each month to our network of families on the South Side. Their twice-monthly, volunteer-led distribution days are based at First Presbyterian Church in Chicago’s Woodlawn neighborhood. Together, we seek to build a local food system rooted in mutuality and community care. They tapped existing networks and partnered with other mutual aid projects, like Washington Park’s People’s Grab-N-Go to sign up our neighbors. Their network now holds over 450 households, self-identified as Black and low-income. With every bag of food, their work toward two goals: to get fresh produce to our neighbors and to support farms across the midwest. You can learn more about their work on the website (click link).
Event Recap
Thanks to everyone who answered the 2022 annual stewardship campaign! The luncheon was a big success too! Folks enjoyed the hot meal (yes, the fantastic fried chicken) catching up with each other. The tree of vision for our church in 2023 is growing up! If you still have any visions in your mind, please stop by the tree and add your leaf to it!

67 names and stories
In the US, we lost 67 transgender and gender non-binary siblings in the past year. Asher Garcia is the youngest among the 67 names. He died at the age of 14, on April 21, 2022, in Frazee, Minnesota (his story). "Increasing responsibilities and expectations are heavy weights for any teen to lift, but the Frazee High School eighth grade student was also reportedly dealing with the added weights of past abuse and a transgender identity that made [him] a target of bullying." Their stories must be heard (link to their stories).
Brave Space Alliance, Chicago Therapy collective, and Life is Work, with support from The Human Rights Campaign, Affinity, Chicago Black Gay Men’s Caucus, Lighthouse Foundation, Chicago Department of Public Health, Equality Illinois, and Southsiders Organized for Unity and Liberation (SOUL), will be hosting a “Trans Weekend of Resilience”. As an effort to reclaim and reframe November 20th as a day to acknowledge our trans siblings that we've lost while simultaneously acknowledging the resilience of our community, this 3-day event will take place from November 18-20th, 2022.
