Planning for Connecticut Avenue's next phase

The look and function of a future Connecticut Avenue goes well beyond bike lanes. DC planners and developers are laying the groundwork for additional housing and retail in upper Ward 3. And the rise of remote work is shifting the commuting center of gravity away from downtown. In an op-ed, Marlene Berlin writes that DDOT's Connecticut Avenue planning needs to reflect these changes, and emphasize walkability and transit between our commercial corridors.

The planning under way as part of the agency's Connecticut Avenue safety study is a months-long work in progress, and we're told there will be more opportunities for public comments like those in October, when DDOT and its contractors held block-by-block walkthroughs to collect feedback on plans for 24/7 parking and loading zones.

We noted in the article linked above that at the October ANC 3F meeting, a DDOT representative briefly discussed ways that cyclists and bus riders might safely intermingle  at bus stops. A 76-year-old neighbor writes of her worry that design plans will have bus passengers crossing bike lanes, and wonders if every cyclist will be patient with slower-moving seniors and people with disabilities.

ANC 3F meets TONIGHT

...on other issues of importance in our neighborhood.

The ANC's November agenda includes an update from DC Water on the Soapstone Valley sewer project. The agency's public communications thus far have omitted details about the installation of sewer bypass piping, including the possibility that the work could produce fumes.

And representatives from the Office of the Attorney General will be at the 7 p.m. virtual meeting to discuss the city's housing discrimination settlement with DARO, the owner and soon-to-be-former landlord at the Connecticut House and Sedgwick Gardens apartments.
