Thank you to our Solefield Parents' Association who donated our new kindness bench. This is a wonderfully colourful addition to our playground helping to represent: friendship, kindness and respect towards each other at Solefield.

Our flying Spitfire

The Spitfire constructed by each boy in our school is flying beautifully, suspended in our library, thanks to our talented caretaker Mr Smeeth.

This is an exciting addition to our school in preparation for our 75th anniversary during 2023 and in honour of our first ever Head, Mr Edwards who was a Spitfire pilot.

Chess Match

A selection of Year 5 and 6 boys were invited to play chess at Sevenoaks Prep this week. Out of the six matches played, Solefield lost 4 and won 2. All the matches were close and of a high standard with some games taking almost an hour to conclude. As we were playing against a team of Year 6 students, the performance (and both wins) from the Year 5 students was particularly impressive.

Staff from both schools noted how the students played in silence with full concentration for the duration of the event.

Year 3 Traffic Survey

Last week, Year 3 enjoyed collecting traffic data on Solefields Road as part of our work on our local area. They learnt how to use a clipboard and were able to record their findings on a data collection sheet. This week they have been drawing graphs to present their results.

Ambulance Visit

Andrew Elphinstone (Mrs Cramp's brother), came to visit Pre-Prep and our Scholarship boys to give a talk about being a paramedic. He spoke about his training, experiences and what it’s like to be a paramedic. He showed us all around the ambulance and even let us set off the siren!

Christmas Light Competition Winner

Earlier this year all of Year 5 and 6 entered designs for the Sevenoaks Christmas Light competition. Many congratulations to Ted in Year 6 won! Ted's design was selected, out of 242 entries, by the major and Deputy Major of Sevenoaks to be made into a Christmas Light that will be displayed in the town.

The picture shows Ted's design alongside a mock-up of the light made by the manufacturing company. We look forward to seeing the finished light on display in Sevenoaks this Christmas.

Open Morning thanks

We were delighted to welcome families to another fully-booked Open Morning on Saturday 5th November. Visiting families enjoyed meeting our excellent Year 8 ambassadors, a presentation from Mrs McClure and a tour of the school by our teaching staff.

We have already received excellent feedback from visitors:

“Thank you to all the staff at Solefield for making us feel so welcome. We thoroughly enjoyed our tour and absolutely loved what we saw.”

“Thank you so much to all the staff for a wonderful morning on Saturday.”

We look forward to welcoming new families and thank all current parents for spreading the word about our school.

Jed - Playground & Sports Prefect

* What does your role involve? I give out match reports in assembly, and I help organise the matches and tournaments. I also help Mr Nagy on the playground.

* What do you most enjoy about your prefect role? The playground prefect to help ensure we have enough toys and balls in the playground.

* What part of your role do you see as most important right now? I really enjoy getting the match reports ready for assembly.

* In what ways do you feel you are making a difference to the boys at Solefield? I am helping the boys have a good time on the playground and I am helping pupils to know what the scores in the matches are. I want to be setting a good example to the younger year groups.

Old Boy News - Jake, Year 8 Leaver

* Which school did you move onto after Solefield? I gained an academic scholarship at Caterham after leaving Solefield. After achieving straight 9s at GCSE and seeing a few of my friends who were previously at Caterham choose to leave for Brighton, I decided it would be a sensible move to make.

* Do you have any abiding memories of Solefield School? I have plenty! Most of them were on the sports field! Mr Parker's personal alteration of the Will Grigg chant, scoring a bicycle kick and halfway line goal in a 2-2 draw at New Beacon and being shown the red card twice (by one of my favourite teachers - Mr Cramp) in the Sackville Marlowe house finals are just a few moments that will live long in the memory! The year 3 match attacks trade wars and Millwall banter with Mr Raymond were equally iconic. Mrs Payne's volcano experiment and sushi tasting session, Mr Farmery's chromatography experiment and Mr Henry's wildly enthusiastic stories were some of my favourite moments in the classroom. Mr Kennedy has to take the crown for my progress in maths as my weekly hattrick attendances and subsequent mars bar consumption is probably one of the key reasons I went on to do 2 GCSEs an AS and 2 A levels in maths. Solefield was a fantastic school with brilliant teacher's and when I reflect back on in it hindsight, those were some of the best days of my life as well as the most fundamental to my philosophy and discipline.
