Stepping Into Action
November 11, 2022

First, From the Heart

What does it take to make a difference in this world? We are each just one being in the sea of humanity, yet we have a deep inner knowing that our individual actions have impact and meaning. Especially when we join forces and work on a collective level, we have the power to weave a just and peaceful world into form.

But as our faculty colleague Dr. David Addiss astutely names, our “compulsion to save the world” can also present serious obstacles to our progress. Sometimes the seemingly insurmountable overtakes our capacity to act and we retreat or withdraw altogether. We’ve all hit the wall at some point. Then what?

We stand with and for each other. We listen and feel. We share resources, support, and most importantly, we open our hearts and lean in. With courage and curiosity, we acknowledge the suffering. Only then can we discern the wise action we are called to take next.

Not one of us can do this alone. If you seek more collaboration, community, and evidence-based solutions, we invite you to join us for a conversation next week to learn more about the next round of Compassionate Leadership Certification Programs. We look forward to connecting then.

Be gentle and brave,
Laura

Research Worth Sharing

Self-Compassion Increases Self-Improvement Motivation
by Juliana G. Breines and Serena Chen
in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, 2012 38: 1133 originally published online May 29, 2012

People fear that self-compassion will “increase complacency and undermine motivation.” The opposite is actually the case. Practicing self-compassion increases our desire to make amends for our mistakes and take action to make improvements that support personal growth. Read the research.

Practice Matters

What Can We Hear?

When the quiet is deep and all-encompassing, it feels profoundly generous. Within each of us is a personal sanctuary of stillness that opens to a vast portal of intelligence. Can we enter with curiosity and wonder? Might we release all of our certainty before entering into the space?

Open all the channels to listen deeply and recognize what is there for us. Open all the doors to receive the gifts that are sent to us. Now we hear what is meant for us. This loving guidance is always present, and yet we often need a reminder to visit. Tune into your compassionate heart to enter the path inward. Our small still voice will coax us onward.

When can we practice? Always!
