November already! Oh my.
Have you been working on a part of your story—or some other creative work— that's hard to communicate?
Maybe because it's complex? Or it has to be very delicately handled in order not to offend someone? Or it's more about a feeling than an event?
I think communication is everything, so it's especially frustrating when we're struggling to make ourselves or a character or creative work understood.
And when we need to express another real person's or group's perspective, it's a huge responsibility to get it right.
A story that's always compelling, imho, is the one in which you or your main character finds themselves translating/interpreting/moderating between two people or groups who are not getting each other at all.
Kudos to you if you ever spontaneously stepped in to help people understand one another!
And if you didn't, there's a story in that, too—and it could probably be told with compassion now.
Here's a prompt that's related to this sort of thing:
Here it is in writing—5-minute time limit:
- Write about a time when you witnessed two people or groups miscommunicating due to a cultural difference or age gap or some other reason. Where and how old were you, what was happening, and did you try to help or not? How did you feel about the whole thing?
Here's a playlist of prompts like the one above. I live-stream new ones on Thursdays on YouTube and social media.
May the prompts inspire you to write about your life with kindness and perspective.
