2022 World Cup, November 21 - December 17

The 2022 men’s World Cup kicks off on Monday, November 21, with 32 teams vying to reach the final on December 18. The USA, Canada, and Mexico will all be represented. Follow it online here and watch the games live in sports bars around town.

Mexico plays its first game against Poland on Tuesday, November 22 at 9:00am. Mexico will be participating in their eighth consecutive World Cup.

Canada plays its first game against Belgium on Wednesday, November 23 at noon. This is the first time that the Canadian men have qualified in 36 years. In 1986, the team lost all three games, without scoring. So if this team scores 1 goal it will be the men's best-ever result.

Fishing & Birding Reports

Fishing Report

We are into winter, but the mornings are still nice. The warm water was creeping closer, but the winds are cooling it off. One boat headed out for a couple 20 pound Dorado and saw a couple marlin.

Reports up the coast were excellent for yellowtail. We saw some good Sierra last week and a few returned Monday. The Bonita are smaller, but still prolific. The yellowtail in close were biting great at times.

I must have run the smoker seven times last week for 150 pounds of fish. I sent some clients off with enough fish to feed the neighborhood for a year. The yellowtail were usually within a mile, and sometimes tight to the rocks. Boils were coming up and jigging worked, but trolling was easy. Makes one start to hope almost that the fish will thin out. I was spending more time cleaning and packaging than catching fish almost every day!

Birding Report

Hola Birding Enthusiasts

Our outings officially began last Thursday and we had seven birders: some regulars and some for the very first time. We headed north on the esterito road that starts at the fish camp near the Esterito Cafe. The heavy rains earlier this summer have left many parts of the arroyo with water and we went to our favorite autumn site (the water dries out during the winter). For a year it was being plowed up for campestres, lots for rustic living. Fortunately, for us, none appear to have sold and nature has filled the area back in. It is a remarkably pastoral area in an arid land filled with thorny bushes and cactus. We had 19 species including a flock of Groove-billed Anis and Lesser Goldfinch. We had lunch at the new Mazeteño restaurant.

My Bird of the Week is the Ladder-backed Woodpecker. A friend and I surprised this little guy as we arrived at what I called the Esterito Road Watering Hole and I was able to grab this photo. Its local name is Carpintero Mexicano.

The Ladder-backed used to be called the Cactus Woodpecker and is found in the southwestern US and throughout Mexico. In our area, it forages and nests in different species of cactus as well as desert scrub and thorn forests. In other parts of Mexico with no cacti, it is found in pine and pine-oak woodlands according to Birdsoftheworld.org.

We have three woodpecker species in the San Carlos area: the Gila Woodpecker, Gilded Flicker and the Ladder-backed. You can easily tell the Ladder-backed by the strong black and white markings on the face. The red crown on the bird in the photo tells us it is a male. The very common Gila Woodpecker is raucous, large, and in your hummingbird feeder if not your face. The Ladder-backed is its exact opposite:  small, quiet and very reserved. With its bashful nature, it prefers to remain in areas of thick desert brush and mesquite. You will not find it at your Hummingbird feeders like that pesky Gila.

It's a very versatile forager and its tactics include probing, gleaning, tapping and even excavating. Insects are its prey.

Our next outing is Thursday, November 17. We will meet at the Esterito Cafe at 8:00am. You do not need to be an experienced birder to join our group. If you do not know anything except that you want to know more, our group will help you learn. If you are an experienced birder and just want to know other birders, then join us and share your knowledge. Please bring your water, sun and insect protection, and a chair. And your binoculars, of course. Outings usually last until around 11:30am and we generally go out to lunch. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at maryltannehill@yahoo.com.

CRRIFS: Wildlife on the Move

As temperatures outside drop, more and more wildlife may be on the move in search of wintering grounds, food and even mates, so it's important to be especially vigilant.

In the last month, two different juvenile gray foxes were brought to Dr. Elsa Coria, wildlife veterinarian and director of CRRIFS, following car strikes. One had a broken leg and internal hemorrhaging, while the other suffered severe spinal column damage, and its back legs were paralyzed.

"Right now is a period of time when foxes are closer to urban areas -- maybe they are looking for food? So it's important to be careful on the roads. Recently, we were at Hotel Playa Cortez trying to catch a javelina we spotted swimming in the ocean towards the hotel. When we later saw it walking in the parking lot, we put out a live trap. But we never caught the javelina; we caught a fox instead!"

Smaller than coyotes and weighing a mere 2 - 4 kilos, gray foxes have a salt and pepper coat with a black-striped tail. As omnivores, they will eat everything from eggs, seeds, grasses and cactus fruit to insects, small rodents, birds and snakes.

Frequently active at night, they will scavenge for roadkill in the early morning hours along the highways. They’ll store extra food by burying it and then marking their caches with their own urine or musk glands.

As the only tree-climbing canines, they will sometimes sleep in mesquite trees to escape predators such as coyotes and bobcats, although the height may not deter great horned owls or golden eagles.

During breeding season in late winter, they’ll select dens in tree stumps, abandoned burrows, boulder pilings or natural caves, lining their dens with their fur, leaves, bark and twigs.

Vixens will give birth to 1 litter of an average of 4 kits per year in March or April. The kits will remain with their parents until maturity around 10 months of age. Thereafter, they’ll venture out on their own, leading a largely solitary life, except during the annual breeding season.

To learn more about CRRIFS’ conservation programs, to report injured wildlife or to find out about turtle hatchling releases, please email contacto@crrifs.com or call 622-152-9934.
