NOVEMBER NEWSLETTER

Training and SOG Selection

DNPW and CLZ commenced a Long-term Training Programme in 2021 to prioritise in-service refresher training and enhancement of a Specialized Operations Group (SOG) including the DNPW and CLZ Dog Unit, Rapid Deployment Team (RDT), and Marine Unit. This November, DNPW Wildlife Police Officers and Community Scouts from CLZ and BioCarbon Partners attended a SOG selection course conducted by Resolve Wildlife to provide a broader talent pool and integrated law-enforcement in the Lower Zambezi.

Thank you to USFWS, Tusk, CITES MIKE, and Lion Recovery Fund for supporting this initiative.

Kangaluwi Mine

CLZ is very disappointed that work has begun on the Kangaluwi open-pit copper mine including access roads and infrastructure development at the original exploration site. Although the petition to stop the project has been signed by close to 50,000 people, it has yet to block the mine from going forward. CLZ is part of the Save Zambezi Safe Zambezi campaign and supports their efforts to stop the mine.

Community Workshop

CLZ conducted a Living with Elephants and Anti-snare Workshop in the Chiawa Game Management Area (GMA) aimed at promoting Human-Wildlife Coexistence by working with communities and providing tools to better understand elephants. The workshop was attended by 120 people from the communities.

Thank you to Tusk for supporting this workshop.

Tusk Awards and EarthRanger Conference

We are honoured that CLZ CEO, Ian Stevenson, was invited to attend the 2022 Tusk Awards ceremony in the United Kingdom this November. Ian has dedicated his life’s work to the conservation of the Lower Zambezi and was nominated as a Tusk Award for Conservation in Africa Finalist in 2020.

In addition, CEO Ian Stevenson and Operations Manager Rabson Tembo traveled to Kenya to attend the 2022 EarthRanger User Conference. This provided opportunities for capacity building, networking with other users and experts, sharing challenges and successes, and improving the way data is collected and used in our systems.

Thank you to Tusk for their incredible support and to USFWS for supporting capacity building for DNPW and CLZ.

CBU Intern

CLZ welcomed Jessy Mwansa to CLZ Basecamp this month. Jessy came to CLZ to help enter and analyse date for the Environmental Education Programme (EEP) and Community Empowerment Programme. She is studying  at the Copperbelt University and is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Wildlife Management.

Thank you to Elephant Charge for supporting Jessy's time with CLZ.

Conservation Quiz

This month CLZ’s Environmental Education Manager conducted the annual Conservation Quiz in Chiawa for nine schools, 72 students, and nine teachers in the Chiawa Game Management Area. The quiz included several intense rounds of questions from CLZ's EEP curriculum. Congratulations to Chiawa Primary and Chitende Secondary schools for winning first prize!

Thank you to Lady Marcy for supporting this fun and engaging day for the students.

Impala Rehabilitation

Introducing Relish! This young impala was brought to DNPW and CLZ and the team is now looking after her until she is big enough to be released back to the wild. She is currently being looked after by the DNPW and CLZ Dog Unit which is no easy task as she requires a lot of time and patience.

Working Dogs for Conservation

This month, DNPW and CLZ hosted Working Dogs for Conservation (WD4C) at basecamp. This provided an opportunity to connect with veterinarians and dog trainers with diverse backgrounds and experience. The team from WD4C conducted a training on first aid for dogs and wildlife and tips and tricks were shared between DNPW, CLZ, and technical advisors from Resolve Wildlife
