Kyōdai
December 3 at 7:30 PM (Doors 7:00 PM)
The Fox Cabaret 2321 Main St. and Streamed online
Sliding-scale tickets $18-$50 (plus processing fee)
We can't wait to see you this Saturday at the Fox Cabaret or on our online live stream of Kyōdai! Last minute tickets are still available below for both the in-person and live online event, and any extra in-person tickets will be sold at the door—avoid disappointment and get your tickets online today!
Join Japanese Canadian musicians Jason de Couto, Prince Shima, and Āza Nabuko as they interrogate their Japanese heritage in a multi-sensory concert experience in collaboration with Powell Street Festival Society and the Nikkei National Museum and Cultural Centre. Gather with us at the Fox Cabaret as these musicians of varied musical backgrounds explore the theme of kyōdai (siblings) through the lens of curated, sought-after home videos from pre, during, and post WWII Internment, produced by artist and video archivist Jeffery Chong. Kyōdai acts as a rallying call to embrace our heritage, deepen communal bonds, and reveal what’s known and unknown about our relationships past, present, and future.
Also at the event, get your hands on some Powell Street Festival merchandise and chat with friends from the festival over refreshments from the Fox’s bar. Kyōdai will also be live streamed online, so you can take part in this one-of-a-kind sonic and visual experience from anywhere!

Applications Now Open
We are pleased to announce that we are now accepting applications for the 2023 Japanese Canadian Youth Cohort!
This program offers an expenses-paid opportunity for young Japanese Canadians, age 19 to 29, who were raised outside of British Columbia to attend the Powell Street Festival, participate in its production, attend training sessions, and create an embodied experience of Japanese Canadian identity as vibrant and vital.

Open Call for Artists & Designers
Leave your mark on the Powell Street Festival Main Stage! We are currently seeking submissions from artists, illustrators, and graphic, scenic, or other designers to create our next Diamond Stage backdrop, which will become an integral part of the visual atmosphere of our festival for years to come.
Powell Street Festival Society happily invites submissions Canada-wide, across disciplines and levels of experience from those who will be able to complete the large-scale, final design. Please share this call with those whose work we may not be familiar with yet.
There are three steps to the selection process for this project:
- First, please submit a link to your portfolio or samples of your work using the form below by January 5, 2023 to be considered.
- Three shortlisted candidates will be engaged to submit a preliminary sketch and design direction. This preliminary work will be paid ($200 per artist), and is not expected to be fully realized.
- The complete design will be awarded to one candidate from the shortlist, and the final backdrop will be digitally printed in time for the 47th Annual Powell Street Festival in August 2023. More details, such as full remuneration, will be provided to shortlisted candidates.

Nikkei Artists Year-End Gathering
The Arts Culture and Education Committee of the National Association of Japanese Canadians is hosting a bonenkai year-end party for Japanese Canadian Artists!
While BONENKAI literally translates to "forget-the-year party" we want to hold a digital party to honour the past year in all the ways we've been able to come together to share space, art, and community! In this informal digital celebration, we will chat as a community, in small groups, as well as in mini-breakout rooms as speed connections.
