In partnership with The Parks Foundation, we’re inviting visitors to Mudeford Woods, and people living and working close to this area, to take part in a survey.

We want to hear your opinions of Mudeford Woods and the health benefits you feel you gain from using the area. Your views will help the ongoing management of Mudeford Woods, as well as other local greenspaces.

Working in partnership for a greener future 💚

Follow Jaz on his green journey that illustrates the vision BCP council and our partners have for the future of our towns and green spaces.

A 25-year plan started in 2019 when we were successful in being one of only nine cities in the UK to be chosen for the Future Parks Accelerator fund: a collaboration between the National Lottery Heritage Fund, National Trust and the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities.

This exciting opportunity has allowed us to explore how to develop wonderful places in which to discover, play, volunteer and meet up, while also helping to tackle the climate and ecological emergency.

The first part of the Future Parks project has now been delivered and we have developed three main themes that draw the work together:
  • Green Heart Parks, a model for brilliant neighbourhood parks
  • Stour Valley Park
  • The adoption of our Green Infrastructure Strategy
Watch ‘Jaz’s Green Journey’ to see these themes brought together.

Improving our parks for us and nature 🌿🐞

This pond at Winton Recreation Ground (pictured above) is a completed project at one of our Green Heart neighbourhood parks.

The aim of Green Heart parks is to develop spaces that enhance health and wellbeing in the local community, help increase biodiversity, as well as help combat the impact of climate change.

The first three parks chosen were Winton Recreation Ground, Bournemouth; Watermans Park, Christchurch; and Alexandra Park, Poole. You may have noticed some positive changes in these parks already as our Park Activators, recruited to work in these parks, have been very busy over the last couple of years!

The nature recovery project

Building on this work, a further eight parks were selected for the The Parks Foundation's Nature Recovery project.

Our plans have included increasing habitats for wildlife, making physical improvements in the parks, delivering inspiring activities for residents to connect with nature, and empowering communities to get involved in their local greenspaces.

Stour Valley Park

The Stour Valley Park concept has evolved through a partnership between BCP Council, The National Trust, and many other local and national partner organisations. Its vision is to shape a landscape for current and future generations, offering huge potential to restore biodiversity and ecological health, and to celebrate and uncover the valley’s heritage and ancient history.

The values for this park, which stretches from Hengistbury Head to the Kingston Lacy Estate, are focused around restoring the health of the river, regenerating wildlife networks, understanding and celebrating our heritage, stimulating the local economy and creating opportunities to get out and enjoy a beautiful landscape full of great places to go and great things to do.

Routes into Rangering: Sarah's story

I began my career in conservation quite by chance. It took me a longer time than many to settle on the career I wanted to pursue and in hindsight, I’m so glad I waited and honed where my real interests and passions lay. At 28, I began my degree in Environmental Science through the Open University. Many who have also studied this way will understand when I say it was the hard way. Choosing Environmental Science as my subject came after years in jobs that did not inspire me and grasping at threads of interest occasionally.

Soon after beginning my degree, I came to the realisation I also needed to work out how to gain experience in the sector, while not really realising what working in the sector even looked like.
