Breakfast: the most important meal of the day?

We've all been told breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but is that actually the case?

Action on Sugar's Sugar Awareness Week focuses on breakfast, and how it actually is often the most sugary meal of many people's day. And with more people heading back to the office, quick and convenient breakfast options are on the rise, although these are often the culprits with the most sugar.

In fact, Action on Sugar found that a bowl of cereal and pot of yogurt with child-friendly packaging could surpass the maximum recommended daily intake for an adult, let alone a child.

We know sugar has been linked to causing weight gain and obesity, which in turn can increase your risk of cancer. It is also linked to type 2 diabetes, tooth decay and liver disease, so it really is important to not have twice our recommended sugar allowance by 9am!

We asked 2 of our nutritionists how to have a healthy breakfast and shared 10 tips to help you avoid processed sugar at breakfast, and instead enjoy a healthy start to the day.

13,000 more cases of cancer are diagnosed each year in men compared to women

Men's health awareness month

Did you know men are diagnosed with around 13,000 more cases of cancer a year than women?

  • 68% of men over the age of 16 years old are classified as overweight or obese.
  • 1 in 3 men drink more than the government's guidelines.
  • Only 25% of men eat the recommended 5 A DAY of fruit and vegetables.
  • In a study of 1,000 men, 3/4 said they would put off going to the doctor even when showing signs of illness.

This suggests that men are less health conscious than women, but it's important we change this. You can make changes, such as eating your 5 A DAY, reducing how much red and processed meat you eat, limiting your alcohol intake and regular exercise – all of which help reduce your cancer risk.
