JEFFREY "TY" BINGHAM RECEIVES PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Jeffrey "Ty" Bingham '89, second from the left, is the Chief of Clinical Pharmacy Programs for the United States Public Health Service. 
Jeffrey "Ty" Bingham '89 was awarded the 2022 Professional Achievement Award by the newly formed Alumni Ambassadors Council. 

Bingham currently serves as the Chief of Clinical Pharmacy Programs for the Federal Bureau of Prisons within the Commissioned Corps of the United States Public Health Service (USPHS). He became a commissioned office in the USPHS after graduation and has served the the United States for 33 years.  


He began his pharmacy practice career stationed at the Indian Health Service Hospital and Clinic in Sells, AZ. He subsequently became the Chief Pharmacy Officer at Federal Correctional Institution, Safford, AZ in December 1989. He was promoted to the position of Bureau of Prisons Regional Chief Pharmacist, Bureau of Prisons (BOP) Chief of Clinical Pharmacy Programs, and in 2018 added the role of USPHS Chief Professional Office, Pharmacist category.
The Alumni Council is co-chaired by Bill Jones '72 and Al Scorsatto '70. Among some of the council's goals are to create new scholarships and to ensure alumni are celebrated during homecoming. The Professional Achievement Award was the first award presented by the Alumni Council.

I was privileged to be one of the faculty who taught him and was a preceptor for a clinical pharmacy rotation at the Tucson VA Medical Center when he was a student," Jones said.

Celebrating 75 Years 

Thank you for celebrating our 75th anniversary with us!

Spotlight | Dr. Mary Caldwell | First Female Faculty Member  
The faculty’s first female trailblazer, Mary Caldwell, PhD, joined the R. Ken Coit College of Pharmacy as a professor of pharmacology in the 1950s. Dr. Caldwell earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from UArizona in 1918 and 1919, respectively. 
Spotlight | David Rhys Axon | From Student to Faculty 
David Rhys Axon, PhD, MPharm, MS, MRPharmS, wanted to become a pharmacist at an early age. 

“My dad is a pharmacist, so pharmacy is in my blood,” said Dr. Axon, who spent summer holidays as a child helping his father in the pharmacy. “I observed the work that he did, and it seemed interesting to me. I always knew I wanted to do something that involved health care and science, so pharmacy was the perfect fit for me.”

I graduated in 1976. Mike Katz encouraged me to come back to school for the first doctor of pharmacy class of 1985. Bill Jones taught me to always place patients first. Bill Fritz taught me to listen to grownups. A long journey guided by amazing people associated with the College.

RESEARCHERS READY TO TEST DRUG FOR TREATING ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE IN DOWN SYNDROME PATIENTS

Christopher Hulme, PhD, (far left) is co-founder of Iluminos Therapeutics, LLC, and among the researchers who developed the drug.    

Co-founder of Iluminos Therapeutics, LLC, Dr. Christopher Hulme have received a three-year, $3.5 million federal Small Business Technology Transfer grant to test the latest iteration of the drug, known as DYR533, to prove it ready for clinical trials.

The hope is the drug can successfully block the development and advancement of Alzheimer's disease in Down syndrome patients.

Harriet Reid describes what being Native American means to her

She shares why she chose pharmacy as her field of study, the faculty who have made an impact and what being Native American means to her. 

Question: Why did you choose pharmacy as your field of study?

Answer:
I've always found medication and the effects on the body very intriguing. I wondered how taking a pill can help heal what ails you, and how the medication knew where to go to provide relief.
