Center for Community Partnerships

November 2022

Hi neighbors,

"Plants are flopping, and leaves are dropping; the garden is letting go," shares gardener and author Margaret Roach. Winter is nearly here, and the evidence is in earlier sunsets, cooler mornings, and the smell of wood smoke. We hope you have seen some beautiful foliage. Be sure to find the bright spots every day; look out for them.

In this month’s newsletter, you will find stories about student work happening in the studio and the community, invitations to exhibition openings and artist talks, as well as information about upcoming Continuing Education classes. All of this is shared to encourage you to engage with RISD in the weeks ahead.

As always, feel free to reach out to us if you have any questions, concerns, or feedback. Please encourage those around you to join the email list.

See you in the neighborhood!

In community,

Bethany Costello, Executive Director
Claudeline Chery, Assistant Director

Campus Updates

Crossing the Pell: A Virtual Reality installation

Experience what it would be like to ride a bike across Newport’s Pell Bridge at Crossing the Pell, a virtual reality (VR) installation, taking place Saturday, December 3 from 10 am – 5 pm and on Sunday, December 4 from 10 am – 3 pm at the Old Colony House on Newport’s Washington Square. The experience is made possible by the visionary work of RISD Interior Architecture students and faculty through a partnership with Bike Newport. [re] Design Giving

Earlier this month, RISD’s Staff Council, an advisory board of staff representatives who promote a positive work environment and facilitate communication across campus, hosted its annual [re]Design Giving Fall Donation Drive and Basket Contest.

This year, 13 teams and departments participated, with entries judged in Most Creative, Most Bountiful, and People's Choice categories.

All food collected was distributed to local food pantries, including Better Lives RI, McCauley House, and the RISD Student Food Pantry.

Volunteerism With Impact

Through decades of volunteering and engagement, Gloria Winston has created a deep connection between the RISD Museum and the local community. A Providence native, Winston has been a museum member since childhood and as an adult served as a long-time volunteer and steward. With her husband, she established the James W. and Gloria M. Winston Scholarship at the RISD Museum, which for 30 years has supported art education programs at the museum for local K-12 students.

“Any outreach program specifically for children gives them an opportunity to experience something they never would’ve had the opportunity for otherwise,” Winston said. “These programs are sometimes the only option they have to see and touch real art.” Read more.

RISD and Three Nights of Lights

Providence’s Inaugural Three Nights of Lights, taking place this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday (December 1-3), from 5 – 9 pm, provides an opportunity to engage with RISD.

The Avenue Concept, a nonprofit organization focused on producing public art experiences, founded and led by RISD alum Yarrow Thorne 12 ID, will illuminate 12 murals and sculptures throughout downtown. Partners in this activation include Tomaquag Museum, Center for Southeast Asians, The Columbus Theatre, Julio Berroa, and local restaurant and business promotions in their self-guided tours. Read more.

Additionally, the RISD Museum will offer free admission until 7:00 pm on Thursday and Friday (December 1 and 2). Read more.

Continuing Education (CE)

CE enrollment for winter begins December 20th. Winter term begins January 9, and the spring term begins February 27th. Register as soon as possible, as many online courses fill quickly. Register here.

CE is also partnering with multiple nonprofits: Crafting the Future, Creatives Want Change, and the Tomaquag Museum, to support and provide access to BIPOC youth interested in pursuing careers in art and design. These partnerships now ensure students have access to various scholarship opportunities. Read more.

Scale to Fit
Woods-Gerry Gallery, RISD
62 Prospect Street, Providence
Gallery Hours: Monday through Saturday, 10-5, Sunday, 2-5

Scale to Fit engages with the approximate, the fictional, and the vague, as they are necessary for making architecture. The generally-to-scale and the nearly life-size – a photograph of a model at its original dimensions, a rendered image that feels almost large enough to inhabit – are juxtaposed with more typical forms of architectural representations constructed to scale. Learn more.
