Students explore the aesthetics of computing in new computer science course at SEAS. "CS73: Code, Data, and Art" is co-taught by Professor Martin Wattenberg and Professor Fernanda Viégas, and teaches students how to create abstract art and communicate data sets through visualizations. Learn more.
Dear Friends,

This week Harvard Data Science Review released its latest podcast episode, "Want a Perfect Face (and Bra): Can Data Science Help?" with plastic surgeon Dr. Heather Levites and Nini Hu, art director and author of AI and Creativity for HDSR. Listen now to learn how data science is being integrated in the beauty and fashion industries.

Stay tuned for a new blog post going live next week with a photo gallery of the HDSI Annual Conference and the recording of the Day 1 tutorial on causal inference with Professor Zubizarreta!

The next HDSI Industry Seminar with Acentech takes place on Thursday, December 8 at 1:30 PM on Zoom! We are delighted to welcome Kelsey Rogers, Senior Consultant and Acoustician at Acentech, to discuss how acousticians use data to inform the design process in architecture. As a case study, Kelsey will focus on the design of the SEC at Harvard SEASRegister now!

I Want a Perfect Face (and Bra): Can Data Science Help?
Harvard Data Science Review Podcast | Episode 23
In this the latest month’s episode, we dive into the glamorous side of data science by exploring the ways the field is being integrated in the beauty and fashion industries. We talk to two experts, a plastic surgeon and a fashion designer, about the tools and techniques they use.

Episode Guests:
  • Dr. Heather Levites, a fellowship-trained plastic surgeon with a special interest in advanced cosmetic surgery. She earned her undergraduate degree at MIT, her MD from the State University of New York at Stony Brook and completed her plastic surgery training at Duke University. She currently practices in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
  • Nini Hu, a designer and art director with over 20 years of experience working with global fashion lifestyle brands and author of AI and Creativity for HDSR. Nini is also the founder of &HER, building customizable bras using AI, eco-friendly fibers, and automated production technology. &HER uses machine learning models to bring body shape and measurements directly to production.

HDSI Industry Seminar: Acentech
The Art and Science of Acoustical Data
Thursday, December 8
1:30 PM – 2:30 PM EST

Virtual (Zoom)
Speaker Bio:

Kelsey Rogers is an acoustician at Acentech with consulting experience in architectural acoustics, mechanical systems noise and vibration control, and environmental noise for a broad range of educational, performing arts, commercial, and residential building types.

Abstract:

Acentech’s vision is to enhance human comfort, communication, artistic expression, and technical function through design and innovation in acoustics, engineering, and technology. An acoustician’s primary role on a building design team is to communicate complex acoustical information in an efficient and compelling way.

In this talk, Kelsey will discuss how acousticians measure, predict, and interpret acoustical data, and how it informs the building design process from early concept design through construction.
As a case study, we will focus on the design of the recently completed and award-winning Science and Engineering Complex at Harvard SEAS, including acoustical simulation of the central atrium that allowed designers and key stakeholders to listen to what it would sound like under a variety of possible design conditions before it was built.
