Why Five Moments?

Life is made up of moments and they come in many different forms. We don’t always recognize the significance or appreciate each one like we should. Every Thursday I share some of my favorite moments with you in hopes that we can all live in and appreciate the significance and impact that each moment offers.

Made For This Moment

Moments To Lead

If you've listened to our Beyond the Bench podcast you know I have a thing for putting carts away. Some would say bordering on obsession.

I've scolded people from Hawaii, Arizona, and California as well as my fellow Iowans. I have not been discriminated against. (The photos in this graphic are from spring break 2022 in Arizona).

We have had fun with it, but it brings up a valid thought for today. It's a small thing to do and takes a little extra time, but the insignificant things are the things that many people overlook or find unimportant.

If we are going to be servant leaders then we are servant leaders in every situation, in every area of life. We don't get to decide where or whom we serve.

We need to serve at every moment and with every person. It means helping those who can never help us and that might be helping the employee whose job it is to gather carts, so we have them for our next shopping excursion.

Do the small things. Put your cart away. Chances are you may find an extra one to put away too. Whether a cart or something else does the little things that others won't. They matter and make a difference.

Moments To Be Better

Dak Prescott Makes Sure to Pick Up His Trash | Ravens vs. Cowboys | NFL

Dallas Cowboys Quarterback Dak Prescott was recently “caught” on tape doing something. That something is showing character.

John Wooden said, “The true test of a man’s character is what he does when no one is watching.”

We could all take a lesson and continue to strive to do things for the right reasons. Not for glory or a pat on the back. Sure, those are nice, but it shouldn’t be why we do the right thing.

Moments From Social Media

My good friend and legendary coach Mitch Osborn from Harlan Community has a grandson named Carter. Carter loves basketball and goes to practice with his dad and assistant coach, Kevin, of course, his Grandpa Mitch.

This moment was shared this week. Being around high school kids is so rewarding. They can help to lift people up and Carter can be a part of the team too.

Sports are great.

Moments From What I’ve Read

The tale, and lesson, of the blue crabs.

When you live near the Atlantic Ocean people catch blue crabs for dinner. As they catch the crabs, they’ll toss them into a bucket or basket. If you only have one crab in the basket, you need a lid to keep it from crawling out, but if you’ve got two or more, you don’t. When there are several crabs, they will drag each other down so that none of them can get away.

There are people like that too aren’t there? People who want to keep others from getting ahead, trying to prevent them from improving themselves or their situation. Why? So, they don’t have to, and they can continue to be comfortable.

I’ve seen that repeatedly, with youth and adults. You need to stay out of the basket with other crabs who just want to pull you down. You can make a choice not to buy into what they believe.

Raise yourself up, and when you do, you’ll raise others with you.

Moments You Remember

Remember all the "reunion tours" that your favorite rock bands go on?

How about the McDonald's McRib making its appearance one last time?

How about Coach Gordon back on the basketball sideline again as an assistant boy's coach at Greene County?

All three of those situations above teach you to never say never. This past Monday night my 30th basketball coaching season began with our opening game.

I've decided to use this season and experience to fuel my daily writing for the next few months. You can follow along on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, or at toddagordon.com.

Education-based athletics has so many lessons to teach us. Leadership, teamwork, sportsmanship (respect), and resilience, to name a few. I'm sure we will experience them all and then some.

We'll see where this journey takes us. I look forward to sharing thoughts with you linked to a sport and experience that has given so much to me already.

It's the same game that will teach me, and hopefully you, some new lessons. Here is what it has taught me already.

1) Sometimes there are just some things you should do. Sure, you can talk yourself out of a lot of things but at the end of the day, you know if you should or shouldn't. If you should, then do it and figure it out from there.

2) You never know when you will have a chance to give back. When a moment presents itself to you will you step into it? I didn't right away but I'm glad now that I have.

I'm looking forward to seeing what this season has in store.

Thank You for reading and supporting Five Moments.

I appreciate you all so much.

Be Blessed!
