This is an urgent alert from the Recreational Fishing Alliance of NSW

Dangerous conditions Friday 2 December Byron coast
South to southeasterly winds will become fresh to strong and gusty along the northern coast during Thursday and Friday as a coastal trough deepens into a low pressure system off the Queensland coast.

BOM is warning that on Friday on the Byron coast, large and powerful surf conditions are expected to be hazardous for coastal activities such as crossing bars by boat and rock fishing.

Check local forecasts to get the latest before you go out on the BOM website at http://www.bom.gov.au/nsw/forecasts/map.shtml

Always tell someone where you are going and when you plan on coming back. If the rock platform is wet ask yourself 'why is it wet?' then watch the ocean for waves and swells for at least 20 minutes. Always fish with a friend, wear proper rockfishing footwear, light warm high-visibility clothing, and wear a life jacket in case you get washed in. Never turn your back on the ocean.

Also check out the links and safety advice on BOM's dedicated rock-fishing weather page.

Whenever you fish

  • choose a safe spot
  • don't fish alone
  • wear non-slip shoes
  • wear a life jacket
  • never turn your back on the sea.
