“Find a Role, Find a Purpose” – Lafayettes Visit ABC

American Baptist College welcomed back one of its most celebrated graduates on Friday, November 18, as Rev. Dr. Bernard Lafayette and his wife Kate toured the campus as part of a Nashville visit. Lafayette, who also served as president of the College in the 1990s, was impressed by what he saw on the campus.

“Dr. Lafayette was thrilled and extremely impressed with the campus growth, especially with how studious the library has become,” said ABC Senior Chief Advancement Officer Phyllis Qualls.

Lafayette is among the notable ABC students and alumni of the 1960s – including his then-roommate John Lewis — who were at the forefront of efforts to desegregate Nashville lunch counters and interstate transportation, along with their work to register voters throughout the South. Reflecting on his time at ABC and his illustrious career, Lafayette told The Tennessee Lookout, “No matter who you are, don’t give in. Change is possible if you have a goal. Find a role, find a purpose.”

Showcasing ABC, Sharing Our Story

American Baptist College President Forrest Harris, Andre Trice, and Demetria McCroskey (Division of Institutional Advancement) represented the College at the 43rd Annual Sunday School Publishing Board Conference, held in Nashville November 27-30. The conference brought together nearly 800 pastors, teachers, church leaders, and others.

“Our participation provided ABC with an opportunity to build and restore relationships with various constituents from across the country,” said Trice. “I hope this will be one more step in our ongoing effort to tell the ABC story as we continue to grow our enrollment and supporter base.”
