Collaborations: PANDEM-2
PANDEM-2 is an H2020 EU-Funded project that aims to develop new solutions for efficient, EU-wide pandemic management by developing innovations in preparedness, planning and situational awareness IT tools. To enhance Europe’s capacity to respond to emerging health threats on a cross-border basis -thus reducing potential interruption to vital healthcare infrastructure- PANDEM-2 is working on:
  • The development of a training platform for health emergencies that includes:
    • pandemic-management database which identifies, maps and integrates health surveillance data from multiple open sources (global, EU, national). This data can be queried and analysed via the PANDEM-2 dashboard.
    • Modelling tools to assess resource capacity (e.g. hospital beds, ventilators) and workforce readiness, to respond to different health threats on a subnational, national, and EU-wide basis.
    • Cross-border pandemic response training and simulation exercises for implementation in EU Public Health Emergency Operating Centres to strengthen the cross-border pandemic response.
  • Development of risk communication tools to support the real-time exchange of information and advice between public health agencies, healthcare providers, first responders and communities affected by cross-border health threats.
  • Improving biosecurity and biosafety through the development of a toolkit with guidelines, protocols and resources on biosafety and biosecurity for first responders, clinical staff and laboratory personnel during cross-border responses.
For more information on the project and to keep up to date with developments, follow PANDEM-2 on Twitter and LinkedIn.

His activities mainly focus on vector-borne, emerging infectious and vaccine-preventable diseases, as well as outbreaks investigations. Tim presented his latest large-scale sectional study conducted in 2021 about the State of the art of epidemic intelligence activities among national public and animal health agencies in Europe in collaboration with the MOOD team.

  • This study aimed to provide researchers and public-health users with locally validated oviposition traps to monitor Aedes populations in La Reunion;
  • This study was the first step of a research project aiming at providing methods and tools for controlling Aedes mosquito populations with the boosted Sterile Insect Technique (SIT)
  • This work recommends using black plastic ovitraps, placed at 1.50-to-2.00-m high in vacoa trees, with vacoa leaves as the oviposition surface.
  • Data availability: The data—and R code needed to run the data analysis, are available in a zip file (ovitrap.zip) found in the Supplementary Information material.
  •  To prepare a vector-control field trial against Ae. aegypti, this study aimed at identifying the best trapping strategy to catch adult Ae. aegypti, using BG-Sentinel traps (Biogents, Germany);
  • Traps with BG-Lure—alone or in combination with CO2, did not improve the detection probability of Ae. aegypti and Cx. quinquefasciatus mosquitoes, for male Ae. albopictus and for females, baiting BG-Sentinel traps with CO2 or BG-Lure had no significant effect.
  • The same apparent densities were found for Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus mosquitoes in both study sites—where Ae. aegypti mosquitoes were found at very low densities during previous surveys.
  • Data availability: Data and R code needed to run the analysis are available in a master R Markdown document named bgtrap.Rmd containing the dataset.
